My father's Firearm...

I have a question about claiming my fathers firearm. My father passed away back in 2000 in rather unfortunate circumstances. At the time of his passing he had a firearm with him and I am pretty confident that he was carrying it loaded and did not have a permit. He also purchased it in AZ from a private party as I have the check that cleared the bank from a bank in AZ and he was not prohibited from owning firearms. I don't know how the laws were 15 years ago but I wanted to know if it is possible that the LE agency still has the firearm and if I could recover it? I am also pretty certain it was not registered. I will probably try the agency that was called to the scene where he passed away but I wanted to get some input from a LEO that might be familiar with this scenario. Thanks in advance for any input.

Sounds rough, and sorry you had to deal with it, but in all honesty the agency probably doesn't have the gun anymore and even if they did you'd have a very hard chance of getting it back.

It's unregistered, which almost guarantees not getting it back in and of itself.

It was collected by the agency 15 years ago, which is ten years longer than most agencies keep them before destroying/dispo-ing them.

Yea.... We had an annual purge in our evidence room. I'd watched them load up the truck with all sorts of them and take them out to the IE to some smelter. Some of the guns were pretty nice. Most were junk guns though.


I don't know what the time frame was, but I believe it was based on the crime. Murder we kept forever, assaults, robberies, etc were not very long.

Are you sure? The coroner report will let you know what is in his possession and who it went to. i.e. yellow metal watch, man's wallet containing $500 (4x$100, 1x$50, 2x$20 & 1x$10). Car key, house key and Zippo lighter. Released to Mrs L. L. Gomez at 1030, 6/30/2000.

Are you sure? The coroner report will let you know what is in his possession and who it went to. i.e. yellow metal watch, man's wallet containing $500 (4x$100, 1x$50, 2x$20 & 1x$10). Car key, house key and Zippo lighter. Released to Mrs L. L. Gomez at 1030, 6/30/2000.
