Anyone here have experience as a YCC? Right now I'm a CO but have been offered a position as a YCC in Ventura. It would only be a 15 minute drive versus the 2 hour drive that I endure now as a CO. It pays more too. I'm just trying to get an idea of what my day-to-day experiences may be like as a YCC. Also, I'm under the assumption that a YCC can carry of duty as long as the quarterly qualifications are met. (LEOSA)

Im not a YCC but i have a friend that was one for about 5 years at HGS before going to Parole. He told me it was more of a counselor or caseworker position. He used to tell me that it was a huge improvement over the CO position. He would have to work the line, but more often, he was working with the wards as a case worker. The only downside was that his ability to transfer was lower because there are fewer positions available. It didnt matter in the end because he wanted to go to parole and that is where he ended up. He has about 8 years in parole. Good luck if you take it.A life is not important, except for the impact it has on other lives- Jackie Robinson -
Not a YCC, but I've done a lot of transports from our JH to O.H Close Chaderjian in Stockton. I've talked to the YCCs there and they all seems pretty happy with their jobs."Far and away the best prize life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." - Theodore Roosevelt

Yeah, ultimately I want to go into the position of Parole Agent. Many CO's that I work with now have been reinstated back into Parole Agents. Good group of guys!!Comment

I was a YCC for over 10 years. The department has changed a lot since then. You need to ask questions about Ventura. From my understanding Ventura is having plenty of issues with the wards. The policies of the department differ from the adult side of things.
YCCs run the units just like a CO would in prison. You carry a caseload and must document their behavior, either on the computer and by parole/annual reports. Also prepare for case conference and document behavior for case conference which would assist you in preparation of other reports. Casework will help you in promoting to parole agent or even CCI.
There is a 10% increase in pay from CO to YCC.
If I was thinking about going to Ventura I would ask question before you leap and maybe do a tour. I hear they will be having an academy coming soon, since they have not had one in many years due to downsizing/right sizing of the department. There are only three institutions left.
