It is a long career, so if Sac County calls first, take it; if Stockton calls first, go with them. Take which ever one comes knocking, and after a few years you can go wherever you want. The key is to get your foot in the door.

Fixed itWorking for County
+ more movement and jobs available
+ jail experience and court service experience
+ better chance of getting promotion (usually since bigger than city PD)
+ get to wear tan and green
Stockton City
+ dont have to baby sit inmates Except the ones running around on the streets
+ go straight to patrolYou're an immediate target
+ better equipment most of the time than county probably not they were broke a year ago
+ shorter time when waiting for back up to arrive Unless your BU doesn't want to venture into that neighborhood
+ get to dress in blueComment

Do your self a favor and go Sac Sheriff. You'll be happy later on down the line.***PSA: Don't be that guy and post "Contact me, I'm interested". Dummy, YOU'RE the one who's interested. YOU contact the seller!

I was 26 when I finished the LASD academy in 1976. Worked the jail for 4yrs. and went to patrol. I actually got to patrol tho in 1982, since I tore my ACL during the PT in the patrol school we are required to go thru. So I was 32 when I began in the streets.
Some know my history of surgeries from the job (8 total), but I'm glad I went Sheriff instead of a PD. As has been said, the jail is a good experience, albeit too long in most cases.
As far as the color of the uniform, tan/green made it easier to hide the "ropes" from the D.I.s. if you missed it. A blue and I suspect a black uniform also, show the "ropes" a lot more. You miss one and the D.I.s will be all over you. If you don't know what I mean by "ropes," you'll find out once in the academy.
Good luck with whatever agency you hire on with.Comment

How did the process work out for you? I had went through similar circumstances about 8 years ago. I went with the first department and eventually lateraled to the other department. Only thing I lost was seniority had I started with the one I work for now.Comment

I lost count of all the guys I have known who were in a big hurry to get out of custody and go to patrol. Then they went to patrol, did it for a few years, and were like "OK, what's next?"
Working the field is a great experience and a formulative part of a LE career, but it is not the panacea that custody deps make it out to be. Like anything else, sometimes it's awesome, and sometimes it's not.Comment

I had a buddy lateral from a PD to an SO, they damn near needed a crowbar to get him out of a custody position to his patrol rotation. Said he spent too much time working out in the weather and was quite happy in the heated air conditioned building.I lost count of all the guys I have known who were in a big hurry to get out of custody and go to patrol. Then they went to patrol, did it for a few years, and were like "OK, what's next?"

Just wanted to give an update. I eventually turned down stockton, and a few others. I am in the Jails with SSD. Does not seem too bad, a little sketchy at first, but not too bad.Comment
