I decided to make a new thread for those going through the process with LASD. I was in the process for the SSO position for almost 3 years and I finally made it. I just need to have my medical re-evaluated since I had a fast heart beat when I took my medical. I start the academy in May.

Anyone else still running for a position with LASD?

Good luck to you. When I went through the selection process 28+ years ago, they had minimum height of 5' 8" and age limit of 34 years. I think it got easier now.

syntaxerror: Just curious, what have you been doing for these last 3 years to prepare yourself? Would you be able to easily handle standard deputy academy PT? Have you trained any DT/MA/MMA?

micro: As you pointed out, DST has gotten much easier and SO hiring/passing requirements are much less stringent than DST...

SVT: SO class 37 graduates this Friday morning. Academy class 404 up north is about to graduate (I think maybe next Friday). Class 405 is the senior class at BC. Class 406 just started at BC (first DT session is this Friday) and 407 will be starting mid-Aprilish (at BC).

Excellent question from Samuelx. When I went through the DST academy I overlooked preparing for DT/MMA/MA, I picked it up ok but I would have felt a lot more confident if I had at least a small knowledge base to begin with.

Well, my life has changed within the past 3 years. Ive just done your typical physical workouts and what have you. Within those 3 years, I've taken college courses and I worked for an agency in a civilian capacity. I was supposed to be in class 37, but the medical portion held me up. Class 38 starts in May. Even though the hiring/passing requirements are different compared to the DST position, I passed backgrounds with CDCR and have my psych coming up next month, but I'd rather take the job with LASD, even though it also pays less.

Why would you rather work for the LASD, especially if it pays less? Would you be looking to become sworn later on? The reason I ask the questions I ask is because you'll be wearing a uniform and carrying a gun and chances are you'll be dealing with the very same aholes and idiots that sometimes assault, injure, and/or kill sworn LEOs. And, if a future goal is to become sworn, you should be preparing yourself way past what relatively little is expected/demanded of you during an SO academy. I've seen a few SOs become sworn in recent years but they were much more prepared and squared away than your average SO.

Yes. I've always wanted to work for LASD. I've heard stories from a friend, who is currently a SSO. My personal and work experience has more than enough prepared me for the SSO position. I believe starting out as a SSO will be a great learning experience and stepping stone towards being a Deputy later on. I was planning on being a SSO until I finish college and get my 4 year degree. After that, I was planning on applying for the DST position.

Yes, working as an SO CAN be a great learning experience. That being said, certain aspects of your role as an SO are VERY different than those of a deputy. Some SOs have gotten into trouble in the past because they overstepped their bounds, even though they did what they did in good faith. I'm not gonna say much more in an open forum, we'll tell you more when you get to BC - just ask during your LD20/Use Of Force lecture.

Nothing wrong with waiting to finish college before becoming sworn BUT consider taking advantage of open hiring. We have had hiring freezes in the past and while they may not always be predictable, they do seem cyclical. You don't need a 4 year degree to become sworn - if you want that degree to be a Plan B in case sworn doesn't work, that's fine, hopefully you've picked something non-LE related.

There are undergrad and graduate programs you can enroll in while working Custody and last time I checked, you won't need a degree from Harvard in order to max out on your pay or promote - I think a BS in underwater basketweaving might even suffice...

Getting on the department will start the ball rolling with pay and benefits, department seniority, and accrued time(s) but the longer you wait, the more you will have to "buy back" if you want that non-sworn time to count towards retirement. All else being equal, the sooner you get on, the sooner you can retire. The deputy pay scale and benefits were recently scaled down (so people getting hired now are getting less pay and benefits than those who were hired before the change) - dunno if/when another cut will come.

Understood. I've done security for a few years and I've never overstepped any boundaries, even when mine were by others. I've heard of the infamous hiring freezes and I was part of the freeze they had for the civilian positions (SA,SO,CA) back in 2012+. I took my written way back in 2012 and never heard a word until May/June of last year.

Oh, I know I don't need a degree at all to become sworn, but I'd have a huge advantage over the tough competition that has previous work experience and a degree. I was in the process for DST, but I didn't continue because I've been told thanks but no thanks and to apply again next year with every other department I applied for, so I figured that going for SSO would be the best route for me until I get my degree and the shrink thought so too when I had my interview with them.

I won't wait to long to apply for the DST position again. I already have 25 semester units under my belt and plan on getting my AA shortly after I finish probation with the department.
