For those that HAVE made a long distance move with your gun collection, what are your recommendations? 1400 miles, I would like to drive in one shot taking turns driving. I'm reluctant stopping overnight with my guns. Experienced advice much appreciated.

make frequent "rest" stops and get out and walk around the vehicle. Change drivers at the 1st sign of fatigue. Don't use the heater, it makes you too comfortable and you will dose off.May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I am👍 1 -
Stop every 5-6 hours for chow. Head calls as needed. Rack out for 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a rest stop, ONCE. It will recharge you. Keep the window or sunroof cracked for fresh air. Keep plenty of pogey bait in the car. It’s no no different than a forced march, you just don’t have to change your socks so much. Also, play entire albums, not just the hits. Get into the deep cuts when you’re on the road.🤙🏻Comment

Stopping isn't the problem, it is where you stop that is. I greatly prefer stopping at campgrounds, much less risk there. Rest stops can have issues as it can be a target place for criminals, including the bathrooms.Comment

The rest stops are packed with people along with state troopers in and out all the time. The ones in Arizona look like resorts. It ain’t like the old days. They are pretty safe.🖐️Comment

I've done it twice.
Make sure the vehicle can make the drive without fail. Have a plan in case your vehicle fails (road assistance, replacement vehicle if renting, etc). Don't go cheap on rental vehicles or trailers... Enterprise seems to have the best maintained and low mileage box trucks.
If at all possible, make two or more trips, so you don't lose everything in case the worse happens. You can lose everything in a bad accident, vehicle fire, or theft.
Don't drive alone.
Rest stops, gas stations, and any overnight stays are exposures.
Have a backup way to get into your vehicle in case you lose keys or get locked out.
If you can ccw, do it. Do what you think you have to do for the situation.
If your firearms can be disassembled, ship what you can that doesn't require FFL in separate shipments. i.e. for ARs, ship the uppers, transport the lowers, AKs ship bolt and carrier, etc. For my moves, I made my long guns inoperable and separated the major componenets into different trips. If some dirtbag gets ahold of any guns, they won't get complete working firearms.
Obey all traffic laws, don't speed, don't get stopped.
Choose routes that minimizes traffic and avoid going through libturd states.Comment

What’s the issue? Once you’re out from behind the iron curtain, you’re home free. I’ve made that drive twice myself in the past several years, first about 5 years ago to pick up a Harley, and again a few years ago to pick up a bass boat.
If you’ve got a relief driver, drive until you feel you should swap and do so. Be sure the person driving the wee hours has had plenty of rest.
Have the guns covered properly so that they are not visible, and be sure to keep the head on a swivel and lock the vehicle at any stops.MAGA - drain the swamp^D^D^D^D^Dcesspool!

I made my move by myself, wife had to wait in CA an extra day for the movers. I loaded all my guns in the back seat of my 1/2 ton truck and all the ammo, reloading stuff and accessories including ammo cabinets in the bed, covered with a tarp. My Truck was loaded down, bed was lower then the front end. Between rifles, shotguns and handguns around 90 guns total and around 40,000 to 50,000 rounds not including reloading components.
I took food, drink and coffee with me. Only stopped for gas (only once as I get 600 plus miles per tank full)and spent minimal time inside during stops, only to piss and pay for fuel and buy snacks. It was a 12-13 hour drive. I also took the route less traveled stopped in the middle of nowhere to stretch my legs and take a break.
My drive was only 850 but even by myself it was easy, your 1400 with two drivers in 22-24 hours should not be an issue. Unless one of you can’t sleep in a moving vehicle, it is really tough for me.Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.👍 1Comment

Pack your long guns in a U-Haul "Wardrobe" box. These boxes are 44-46" tall and made to put hangered clothing in them. Bury your long guns in amongst your clothes on hangers. No one will notice. I had a moving company do this (my hiring company paid for everything) and when I aske the packers/movers, they said they do this all the time and it was no problem for them. The company policy was no ammo or components but they packed it all up without problems even though I smuggled my powder and primers within camping gear (tents and sleeping bags). I gave them 8 flats of reloaded shotgun ammo as a "thanks" even though I didn't need to.
On my first day of work, a coworker told me a story of someone whose belongings were in an accident on I-40 and all their stuff was spread out on the highway. That gave me a very bad feeling but everything arrived just fine.
You'll love it in Texas. No roster, no waiting period, no being treated like a criminal when you buy ammo. Get your cars registered in TX ASAP at the county DMV, then get your driver's license through the DPS so you can buy guns. TX DL's can take forever but get an appointment in a remote location such as Sherman and you won't have to wait 3 months for an appointment in a heavily populated area such as DFW.Last edited by rsrocket1; 11-06-2025, 7:14 PM.Comment
