I will be moving in a month or so and my truck?s CA registration is due in a few days. I really dont want to give CA another dime of my money ($500), but not sure how AZ reg works. I am thinking of just letting it lapse in CA since we really wont need to drive it until we move and registering immediately upon getting an AZ address, will this cause any issues trying to register a truck with expired CA tags?

Agree, Arizona law says your vehicles must be registered within 30 days of becoming a resident.
Don’t know were your going but in most places at least outside of Phoenix, you’ll be in and out quick with a lot more money left in the bank.Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.Comment

When it expires in CA put a non-op on the vehicle. Then when you move get a trip permit. Both are low $ costs.May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I amComment

Az dont care about the ca part. Just leave and register here don’t give ca a dime.Comment

If you hold title to the car outright, I'd recommend bringing it with you and transferring the title to AZ. Multi-year registrations receive a discount. If/when you sell the car you can apply for a pro-rated refund of the remaining registration term.
If there is a lienholder on your title they will not transfer title to AZ, only the lienholder can request it...no clue how many will do this. On one of our cars the lien holder was an AZ credit union and they wouldn't make the request ...
If you file a change of address on your CA title - this will magically have absolutely no effect on where they will mail the title when the lien-holder releases it. It will get mailed to your last registered address...perhaps changing the CA registration address to an AZ address would have worked.
For 1 car I was in the same boat as you; I literally left CA on the day before my CA registration expired and then registered in AZ. 3 years later we went through hell trying to get a duplicated title sent to us in AZ. Duplicate title requires some mumbo jumbo from the last registration (no exceptions) If you no longer have that reg - they don't care - their answer is to register the car in CA and they will send it to you - which might entail multiple years of reg to get current.
My wife's, cousin's, daughter works at a commercial dealership in the state of Washington - somehow she was able to pull up the secret registration code needed to get the title. CA DMV & AAA both said it wasn't possible.Comment

CA may continue to hound you for registration even AFTER your vehicle is registered out of state. It's been 4 years and two states and CA still sends me demands to pay registration on two of my vehicles. I just wrote "moved to Arizona" on the bill and mailed it back. That was the end of it.Comment
