I want to de-kalifornicate it. I want to take the muzzle brake off and put the flash hider back on. I wasn't in a hurry because I didn't really have any place to shoot it anyway. But I'm insanely considering the Red Oktober match in Phoenix next month. It might be sold out for all I know. It's not something I can easily do myself because the front sight has to be taken out and moved over to the flash hider.

The stupid thing is that when I took it to kali I had a gunsmith put the brake on, then I haven't shot the thing since.

Thanks, I sent them an email.

Hoping to find someone a little further south though.

Is the match in AZ? I know the last one was at Rio Salado. I thought they were going to do this year in St. George, UT and then it was canceled?

Apparently there are different versions of Red Oktober. This is Red Oktober Cold War, and it's at Rio Salado at the end of the month. Pretty much irons only, and considering my vision it would be purely luck if I hit anything past a hundred yards. At the local range when the RO points at the 300 yard steel, I can't even see it until I get on the scope, lol.

At any rate the best irons I have are on my M1A. I do have a carry handle I could steal from my AR pistol, but I don't really have any suitable 16" upper to put it on.

I might be missing something, but all you need is the castle nut pliers and a set of allen wrenches to do it. It is a very easy thing to do yourself.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

I did this when I took my M1A to California.

The sight blade needs to be drifted but it?s pretty easy to do with a punch and a small hammer.

What I do now is I bought a second front sight to leave on the muzzle brake, so now I just need to do the castle nut set screw thing.

Gun blue has some diy tutorials but I use the wrench I bought from KeepShooting.

This gun is pretty clean looking. Let me anywhere near something mechanical with any tools, and at best it's going to look effed up afterward, and at worst it's going to be broken into many pieces.

Something I know that needs to be hammered out and hammered back in somewhere else? I'm not going anywhere near that if I care about it even a little bit, and I really like this M1A.

I know what you mean. Any good gunsmith like Wright Armory in Mesa can do this for you. They are pricey for some things so you might want to ask. It?s probably about 15 minutes of work.

It took about 15 minutes for the first guy to put the muzzle brake on, and that was only because there was a ton of thread locker on the flash hider. He had to use a MAP torch on it. Since that stuff is gone, it's probably 5 minutes to swap them back.

Yep. Not hard at all if you do it slowly. Not sure if you have seen this before, but it?s worth the watch. I went from being intimidated/scared of messing up my rifle to being confident with maintenance now. Tonyben is the man.
