    State Specific Truck Gun Issue

So I'm looking at moving to MN here in the near future. Obviously good for owning guns. SBRs and suppressors are good to go and CCW is easy to get for 5 years. Being kind of a blue fudd state though, they have some weird carry laws. For example, long guns must be unloaded and cased, with no meaningful exceptions. CCW applies only to "pistols" as defined by statute.

This presents an issue for the typical "truck gun". Now at the moment, pistol braces are good to go. But by the time I get there, they may not be with the impending AFT "ban". I do plan on getting at least a couple form 1s going when I arrive, but it doesn't solve the issue of MN only allowing "pistols" to be carried loaded.

So I'm considering my options and thought I'd ask CG if they've got some ideas. This isn't likely to be carried every day, but would be nice to have something with more capability than a 9mm handgun. Primarily thinking 5.56, 300 BLK or the like. I've considered a 5.7 handgun with optic, but even the fast 27 grain bullets designed to punch through soft armor get pretty anemic past 25 yards from an 8" barrel. Longer than the handgun I'd be carrying in the vehicle.

I could just carry a buffer tube AR pistol and learn to shoot it like that, but maybe there are better ideas out there.

See MN definition of pistol below. It almost seems as though it could include an SBR or SBS (only C&R in MN) or possibly a Tac14/Shockwave as a "pistol". I don't know if this definition is clear enough for me to want to be a test case to see if SBRs are "pistols" as defined by MN law. They have a stock, so not really "one handed". Stupid laws.

Subd. 2.Pistol. "Pistol" includes a weapon designed to be fired by the use of a single hand and with an overall length less than 26 inches, or having a barrel or barrels of a length less than 18 inches in the case of a shotgun or having a barrel of a length less than 16 inches in the case of a rifle

Wife and I almost always take a 9 with us on walks or on drives, but sometimes we bring a 357 mag revolver if we are going jeeping.

I'd do a braced pistol. If/when braces are banned, get a bare tube and fire from the cheek. See yootoob channel Demonstrated Concepts to learn how.

Yeah common handguns are no problem, even here in CA for me. I've got my carry permit here. Looking more for something in a rifle caliber I can carry in MN when I move.

Yeah that might be what I end up doing. Hope that something happens in regard to the "rule change" and chevron deference with their rule making BS.

What about an AK pistol like a Zastava?

Buy made in USA whenever possible.

Certainly an option. The lack of buffer tube makes it even more compact.

I would not want a AK/AR pistol for a truck gun, unless it had a brace.

With a rifle caliber Truck gun I want to be able to take well aimed shots at distance. As well as a stable platform, without the brace I’d rather have a full size handgun.

If you carry you already have a handgun on you, makes more since to have a rifle or braced pistol in your truck.

But yeah if the laws don’t allow it, I still don’t know if I’d want an AK/AR none braced pistol. I’ve always thought of them as more irritating and gimmicky then functional.

Rifle caliber pistols do have range and power advantages of course, but yes I generally agree that without a brace or stock they are seriously disadvantaged.

I may just go with a cased, unloaded rifle. Either an SBR or just a regular 16" carbine. Fortunately any case fulfills the requirement, no need to lock it or have it in a specific location like CA.

I've got some time still and plenty of options. I guess just figuring out what combination of case and gun works best.

Where there’s a will there’s a way, I’m sure you’ll figure out something that works for you. My truck gun is a no name home built 16” AR with a red dot, have better ones but it works well and has lived in my truck for over 5 years now.

Slightly off topic, but where are most of you storing or plan on storing your truck gun?

My Tundra CrewMax's backseat does not have access behind it and the lower/seat half flips up with less than 2" of clearance. I have a Diamondback tonneau cover that is more secure than the cab, but don't see much use in having it locked in the bed of the truck.

I've considered carrying a Keltec SU16 since it folds and takes AR mags.

Digressing to the 70s in Idaho, when almost every pickup truck had a gun rack on the back window holding at least one deer rifle....

There are now a number of AR-type rifles that have pistons and a folding stock. Some are not real expensive, like the Brownells BRN-180, the Foxtrot Mike zhukov thing, AK's, mini-14, HK's and clones, as well as expensive ones like SIGs and FNs.

My carry gun is usually a Glock 19. I also keep under a seat, a Rugger PC carbine in 9mm in my truck that takes Glock mags. It is a pretty compact rifle, but it also breaks down into two pieces to make a really small package to tuck away anywhere.
