people using Vet status as an entitlement...

hey guys, just wondering how you guys feel about people using the "im a vet card" to feel entitled to something.

today at work i was helping a customer who became upset because i wouldn't do something for him because of company policy and it was unsafe. he became angry with me and went off on a tirade about how the government is telling him how to live because they told my company what was safe and not safe for him...then randomly out of no where he threw in that he is a Vet and that i should take care of him.

im all for helping out and supporting vets, they have earned it but it seems like he was trying to use it to make me feel like i had to do it because he was a vet and that i wasn't appreciative.

my buddy who is a vet who just got out a year ago from the army who also works with me says guy like that are POS and should never use the excuse of being a vet to try and get something.

just curious how you guys felt about people like that since most/all of you are vets yourself or still active.

Your always gonna find those "people" who feel entitled no matter what. Being a Vet myself i dont feel like anyone owes me anything and feel kinda weird when people thank me. I only talk about it if they ask. If u ask him he was probly a cook in the Air Force.

The only thing I will ask nicely, is if discounts are offered at a place of business.

But to use your veteran title, thinking you deserve special treatment or thinking they owe you a favor.. it's a pretty scum-y thing to do. IIRC, you can get caught with drugs, chaptered, get an OTH / General discharge, and still be considered as a veteran. So being a veteran in itself, doesn't mean he's done great things worthy of extreme recognition. It just means he served, whether honorably or not. I definitely like to give every veteran the benefit of the doubt and believe they are awesome guys/gals. Every vet I've met at my school's veteran organization has been humble and fun to be around.

Hate it. I will not bull that BS with anyone, or any business. That has nothing to do with 99.9999% of daily life. I wont ask for a discount either. I actually get very angry when I hear people pulling that card. It reminds me of a person that did one good deed and uses it the rest of their life like they are gods gift to mankind.

Did you do it to serve your country and help, or did you do it for $1.50 off at Waffle House, and so you could remind everyone about it every chance you get.

Reread your post. That's my most hated line. Towards a business "This is how you treat veterans". No. That is how they treat customers. Being a veteran has nothing to do with this. STFU douchebag.

I'll only use that line if it gets me laid... Other than that, I keep it in my pocket.

              I understand!

I deal with them at work every now and then.

"Oh so You're a vet? Me too. I don't even get what you're asking for"

One guy "when I was in the marine corp we were a hell of a lot more organized than you, I would have had all the people lined up and taken care of 10 times better than you"
"Sir. This isn't the marine corp. we can't yell and belittle our customers into submission like you're used to. "
"I'm a veteran for Christs sake!!!"
"Take a number. I am and so is the guy next to me. "

The way I look at it, every single person should, during their lifetime, serve their country in some way. For me it was three years in a row in the army. I am not "owed" any special considerations, though it is nice that there are a few should I choose to avail myself of them.

Those who spend 20+ years deserve more as do combat vets. But to demand extra from the public sector just because you are a vet is tacky at best

JFK said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Too many people today do not understand the importance and wisdom of that statement.

I only used the entitled attitude when dealing with the VA...because in that context I AM entitled.

I will say that I try to take advantage of vet related freebies and discounts. Just went to a Stockton Thunder game on Saturday for free with the whole family. They gave away really nice seats too and my kid had a great time.

Because I contributed money out of my paycheck in order to be eligible for VA educational benefits.

Therefore I am entitled to those benefits.

I'll ask if a buisness/vendor gives a military discount, but beyond that I dont make any big deal of it.
