    bad news today

a very good friend of mine who was one of the first people I met in the Army Reserves died today. as of right now I do not know the cause of death. He was just promoted to E8 not too long ago.

what really sucks is that I'm away at AT and I doubt I will make to the service which really pisses me off. some say the Reserves you don't miss anything well here is this one it truly sucks.

That sucks bro. Sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry that the Army has lost another good soldier. No matter how much bad news we get in the service, it doesn't make it any easier.

Why some live while others die is the oldest mystery of combat. Get home alive should be your mission priority. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

this is happening too much these days and it's people I know.

good news is that I may be able to get a pass and get a rental car and drive home for the service. it be out of my own pocket that doesn't bother me one bit at all.

Ask your commander for permission to attend the service. Your chain of command should back you up. It requires a little bit of work to get your orders amended or cut but it's certainly doable.

I have asked and no answer yet. Its one of those training missions that we are on. Regs dictate that only red cross message can get you out.

Since he is not "family" but he is. Fisrt sergeant has no problem with it. the LTC I work for says no due the image it might put out. It is up the to the commander to decide.

I have no problems paying to go to the service. She did say if I'm allowed to go she'll amend my orders for the days im gone .

I have no probi with that either. The pay is irrelevant to be there to say goodbye to my friend. It would mean so much to me if I can go.

If I cannot go I understand. As of today there are no funeral arrangements yet. If I'm lucky it will be at the tail end of AT.

If you are on an AT Group order and not individual AT orders then they cannot simply ammend the orders. We had a similar situation a while back in my current unit and we shifted trainind schedules around and covered down so 3 NCO Instructors could attend the funeral of another NCO that had been in their unit. We didn't amend orders or anything. They went and came back and mission continued. It is totally possible to let you go and come back to finish the mission.

of course it is doable we know this. but those in charge don't see it that way. they see it as setting a bad example of favoritism in some way or another.

as I stated the First Sergeant is all for it. he says go he gets it. officers don't. it's all about numbers.

I stated before that I understand the rules for letting people go for stuff like this. in all seriousness it can be done and be on a case by case basis. I have zero reason to BS the unit about something like this.

as of today I have a tentative date and it's a few days before we leave back to Riverside CA. thankfully we are in CA doing our AT. if I get lucky it will be on the 31 July. that day and the first are tear down and packing.

I have updated my old platoon's facebook page of the dates and a strong showing of us in uniform if possible would be great for his family.
