I think the biggest misconception about this test is that people assume it's going to be like the SAT that they took in High School which is all Mathematics/Critical Thinking/Writing. The ASVAB is comprised of much more than that, there are 145 questions(if you take the computer version, which you most likely will) and 70 of those are related to Science, Electronics, Automotive, Shop and Mechanical. That's 48% of the entire exam, so do yourself a favor and brush up on them as well because that's a large chunk of your score to waste.

Oh also, the computer version is Adaptive meaning it becomes harder/easier depending on how well you answer the questions. So if you're extremely intelligent, your exam will be much more difficult compared to someone who is just barely getting the minimum score. Here's a copy of paste about it:

An adaptive test dynamically tailors questions to the ability level of the individual examinee. All examinees start with a question of medium difficulty. If the examinee answers the question correctly he/she is given a question that is more difficult. If the examinee answers the question incorrectly, he/she is given a question that is easier. Therefore, the examinee only answers questions that are appropriate for his/her ability level, not wasting time answering questions that are too easy or too difficult.

let's see, I just took it late last year. here is what I did and I scored fairly well.

get a reviewer or two (I used asvab for dummies & barron's) if you have not done yet and work on your weak points. trust me you will get a better score rather than winging it. math problems: if you're taking too much time then just guess it and move to the next question.
take practice exams every now and then. what gets you the most is the timer, ignore it if you can but make sure you have plenty of time to complete everything.
get a good nights sleep the day before the exam.
don't over eat before the exam but hydrate often. a full belly makes you sleepy. and lastly bring a jacket. it's hard to concentrate when shivering and the exam room is much colder for some reason.

good luck and if you don't score well study again and try again the next month. you only have a couple tries for a year.

As said above, get a study guide and take some practice tests. The ASVAB isn't very hard. I got a 93QT score in 1982 and I am a barely functioning moron.

as stated above, the asvab is not hard, its just to see what skills you excel in.

Just study up on math and English; that makes up your gt score. It's a fairly easy test.

ASVAB is easy compared to SAT's. 99 on asvab but only 1040 on the SAT's back in 1990's.
It probably favors those with street smarts more than strictly booksmart people.

Been about 5 years since I took it so it may have changed, but I would say that depending on how long its been since you were in a math class that basic algebra and geometry study could be a good score booster for you if you are rusty in those areas. The rest was reading comprehension, logic, mechanical, and electrical problems as far as I remember. I have zero specific knowledge about electrical circuitry or the way an engine works but my overall score was still good.

If you "test well" I don't think you have much to worry about but if you know you have weak areas then by all means address them as best you can in the time you have... Remember that your recruiter wants you in when they want you in, but they aren't going to shut the door on you if you hold out for more study time. If you need the time take it. Better that than to take it when you aren't prepared and either wind up stuck with a job you don't want, or have to wait ages to be able to take the ASVAB again.

As Blitz said: Bring a Jacket. I had no problems with the ASVAB but when I came in for my med screening I spent all day shivering because of the A/C and got no sleep the night before. Ended up having to get screened for Tachycardia which was a pain...

There is one porrion that is timed (coding? ), our proctor told us to just put a dot of pencil lead in the bubble instead of filling it all the way in. Otherwise it was pretty easy.

If you have good grades in school, then this advice is sound. It wouldn't hurt to brush up on some math depending on where you have trouble. Other than that, a calm mindset and you'll be good to go!
