Silver Dollar Salute Curse?

Here's a new one to me. So I'm headed to Quantico shortly to start WOBC. As part of the tradition upon appointment you give the person who renders you your first salute a silver dollar. So I purchased a 05 USMC silver dollar for the occasion. So anyways I was talking to some of the other guys selected going with me and I guess if you cheap out and just use the Eisenhower silver dollar it's bad luck. Pretty amusing. Just seeing if anyone wise has heard this myth?

My sister and her husband both graduated from the Air Force Academy. At the time, I was enlisted in the USAF and was in uniform at the ceremony so I was the first person to salute my brother in law and received his silver dollar. I'm sure it was an Eisenhower dollar as that was the only game in town at the time (1982).

In hindsight, a genuine silver dollar (such as a Peace dollar or Morgan dollar) would have been something the recipient would keep forever. I think that your choice of a USMC silver dollar would likewise be something the recipient would keep forever.

I think it was geared more for the guy starting a new career path. Like I mentioned it was more entertaining then anything else. A class full of superstitious people. This is going to be interesting.

Never heard of that. I purchased a regular mint silver dollar. The Soldier I gave mine to ended up working for me in Afghanistan a couple years later as an NCO.

I had a brand new butterbar give me a dollar bill as I was his first salute. Very sad.
