    Boot recommendations for SOI

Going to be heading to SOI here petty soon and would like too pick up a new set of boots before that. The combats i was issued in boot are thrashed and the jungles i was wearing during Marine week have to be some of the most uncomfortable boots i have ever worn.

Is there a specific brand and model yall would recommended picking up from the px? Something nice and comfortable.

Everyone raves over danner boots, I however refuse to spend 250 bucks on heavy *** boots. I prefer the bates lites with insoles for comfort but they won't last very long in the field and really aren't designed for the terrain.

We are supposed to be all wearing rat boots before to long so I wouldn't spend the money unless I had too.

You said yours are trashed, but did you try just cleaning them with one of the cleaning kits? Also you could go to quarter sales at mcrd if your local.

Trashed meaning the insulated liners on them have fallen apart and the soles have to be stuffed back in after you take the boots off. No matter how hard i try the soles never quite go where they are supposed to be. My feet are still swollen from having to wear those garbage things during the crucible.

I am not local to mcrd but i will be stopping by there before i head out to soi to have a broken finger looked at. Where is this quatre sales?

You're issued boots will be just fine, I was just like you when I went to SOI, spent all kinds of cash on boots, gear, knifes and all that. Looking back now I see what a waste is all was.

Wait until you get to the fleet, talk to your seniors and see what works and what doesn't.

This time of year? Buy some gel insoles and some good socks and get another set of Altama jungles.

We were issued jungles and Danner ICB's when I was in in 98-03, but the brand of jungles differed from what was available at the PX, and the PX brand was MUCH better. I felt the Danners were heavy and only good for cool wet weather, and basically worthless. Once you stepped in deep water

I also liked all leather Altama's.

its the Marines, before you buy anything, make sure its within regulation.

Learn quick, otherwise yer gonna have 4 years of jacked up feet. I agree, invest in a few good sets of socks, a pair of gortex socks, and 3 boots for various locations / climates.

My personal favorite are the Danners and Corocans (same parent brand as Matterhorns). I really favor the goodyear welt construction (the section that sticks out on the sides to connect the sole to the last) compared to the current running shoe style lasts on the Bates Lights or the Bellevilles in terms of durability and comfort. The goodyear welt really forces a wider weight dispersion for your feet.

However, like many have already said, they are usually heavy as sin. In my unit we are all required to wear steel toe, so it's not as much of a deal (and there are not a lot of options), however, each extra pound on your feet is roughly equivalent to around 4.7 to 6.4 lbs on your back http://www.fjaderlatt.se/2009/11/wei...your-feet.html

If you're PT'ing a lot in boots/utes, I would still suggest maybe looking at some Bates Lites and then some heavier boots for field use. But like others have said, you are making jack squat right now, and need to use your money wisely. Are you sure it's a boot quality issue, vs. boot fit and proper socks? The socks they issue you are garbage, you need some Rockys, Smartwool or Wigwam synthetic socks that will hold up their shape. I still wear some Wigwam socks from 2006 that I used at Bridgeport (albiet they are a little stiffer now). With the price of socks you can easily get 8-10 pairs for under the price of a new set of boots.

                          +1!!
I found I always got 1/2 - 1 size larger boot than necessary. In the cold weather you can wear a thin issue sock, and a thick wigwam. In the summer, get 1-2 of those cheap inserts to fill the space and add extra cushion.

If you are stationed at Pendleton, 29 stumps, or even Lejeune, properly set up jungles will serve you quite nicely for most of the seasons. You just need to upgrade the insoles and get some good socks and you'll be straight.

And please make sure you buy all tan w the ega on the heel like the bates belleville or danners in mainside or at cash sales. All others aren't in uniform regs and itb is still a school.

If there are no holes wear what you have. the belleville jungles you should have just need to be broken in. I vote for bates lites if you want cheap light and comfortable (lasted about 8 months to a year for me) or belleville hot weather if you want them to last a year or two. Thats what worked for me.

P.S. People are more than willing to pay good money for you to cover their 2hr firewatch on weekends. I highly recommend hanging back a couple weekends a month and making some extra cash.
