it took 6-7 months from when i applied. i applied within my first year. i probably applied 6-7 months after i got out. so by the time i got my check it was backpayed all the way to the day i got out. and when you fill your **** out, document the hell out of it. put down everything you can possibly remember. its a lot of paperwork but i think most people just put down the minimal possible so they can get done with it. i got lucky and had some old vietnam vets tell me these tips to filling out your paperwork. they said dont lie just be as honest as you can be no matter how much things hurt and never miss your doctors appointments. the va checks that stuff and they base part of your decision on if you make your appointments because it shows you have problems and are working on them or trying to get as well as you can.Comment

You got 27k for a year of back pay?? Damn! Did you already get rated and your trying to up it? Or did they tell you you didnt rate. Ive been fighting off and on for about 4-5 years I think for my ears. They gave me 10% for tinnitus but said I had no hearing loss or damage to my ears even though my records show ive had my eardrums blown out. But ive heard they always deny hearing loss.Comment

I'm still waiting for my claim to go through. No idea what I'll be rated at and haven't had any follow up evaluations by the VA (which I'm sure they will do on their own based on some of the things I claimed, like lower back). I'm in school now and after this week the semester is over. I have a number to a lady from the VA who called me about a month ago and told me if I hadn't heard anything in a few weeks to call her and she'd start an investigation. After finals I'm going to give her a call.Damn! Did you already get rated and your trying to up it? Or did they tell you you didnt rate. I claimed tinnitus and hearing loss as well and have a full history of the hearing loss from before deployment and after, including civilian hearing tests after I got out. My buddy who got out the same time as me already received his ratings and money through Virginia's VA and he only had to wait five months. He DID get approved for the hearing loss so that's good news.Last edited by Scuba Steve33; 12-11-2012, 7:40 PM.Comment

Yeah I have to go to a civillian doc to get my ears checked out. The va told me my hearing loss is a no go. The second time I went they said you do have hearing loss but not enough for us to give you a rating of even zero. Which is funny because when I went to their hearing evaluation guy (lady) in LA she told me that I had a pretty good amount of hearing loss. She said she would right it up because it was definitely enough for a ratings. And then I requested a copy of her eval and it painted a picture of sunshine and rainbows. So now I have to go get a civillian doc who has nothing to gain from this or lose from giving me a legitimate hearing eval. Good luck on yours.Comment

That sucks man, hope it's not too much of a rough road to get your deserved compensation. I'm not living paycheck to paycheck without the disability so I'm in no rush but it would be nice to get and know it went through fine. When that fat check comes I won't be too upset though.Yeah I have to go to a civillian doc to get my ears checked out. The va told me my hearing loss is a no go. filed a claim in august for herniated discs in my back, migraine headaches and athsma, got a packet last week from oklahoma asking me to send in LODs, orders, ect. Apparently my packet got sent from Oakland where they are backlogged to hell and sent to OK which is a good thing. Still haven't gone to any appointments or anything though."Soldier, you need to turn your ACOG off before the batteries die." - PMI Instructor, subject matter expertComment

I greatly suggest starting your claim pre-seperation. I did that with mine and the claim went to Salt Lake City where the wait would be less compared to Oakland where mine would have gone, where they are backlogged all to hell as mentioned above.Oh man... you guys have some struggles. It used to require to you register at VA regional office or tricare office ect, which I did not do because I am 5+ hours away from any of those. But earlier this year the VA changed it where it allows you to apply for the Premium account by answering a series of challenge questions such as social, birth date and other stuff I cant remember exactly (been months since i registered on the site).NRA Endowment MemberComment

Every chance you get get any injuries documented. Every tkme you get your srb or medical records make a copy. And when you go to taps before you get out file everything you can with the VA rep that is supposed to be there. And then get copies of that. Dont let them tell you they cant do it because you dont have enough time . They did that to me and I got out. Requested a copy of my records and half the stuff that was in them is gone.now I have to fight for every little thing because all I wanted to do was hurry and get out like everyone else does when they are at the end of their enlistmentOh man... you guys have some struggles.
