When in civies i stand at POA and put hand over heart.
During award ceremonies, it is customary to salute the officer presenting you the award or medal. This applies both outside, and inside.

Dunno why, but i always get a lil' choked up now when I hear a good rendition of our National Anthem. Taps always gets to me too....

I do it with hand over heart at POA, and I get pissed when I see people milling about and making a bunch of noise when the anthem is playing.

Correction, you're right I forgot about that. I was thinking national anthem indoors. We do have people who render salutes for the anthem indoors and are corrected afterwards.

depends on the venue for me
laying a body to rest, gets a salute, honoring the fallen, gets a salute
the anthem at the rodeo, hand over heart, unless it is in relation to the above.
legion/VFW, salute, everyone there are vets and everyone salutes.
just a few examples of depending on venue
