Knives on base?

I always had some sort of knife on me when I was in. Even when they put me in cuffs the MP just thought it normal and didnt hassle me for it even though he thought i was lying to him about my unit because he had never heard of it.

If we were doing training I had an old Ka-Bar on my belt. Its funny forgetting its there and walking into the PX to buy smokes. And stop worrying so much about these things just play it by ear and ask your superiors they would know better than us.

This. If you freak out about every little culture shock you experience in the Army, then your stress level will be unmanageable. It is stressful enough as it is.

Guns on post are an issue. Knives are not. MP's are dicks, and the sworn enemy of the Infantry. Can you get in trouble for having a knife if you're not supposed to, or don't know the post specific rules? Probably, but I have never seen it happen... or even heard of it happening. If an MP stops you, chances are he can arrest you for a dozen things that you are doing wrong that you don't even know about. (remember how you gave up all your rights to defend them for others? yeah, this is what I am talking about) so don't be a douchebag to him, and hope that he's not a douchbag to begin with.

That being said, if he arrests you for something like having an assisted opening, spring loaded tactical folder clipped to your pocket, then you're going to have an annoying evening. You'll likely spend the night in the brig, and your 1SGT or CO will have to come in the next morning to pick you up. When they find out that you were arrested for carrying a knife, they will likely flip out on the MP NCO who is there at the desk (and probably isn't even the ******* who arrested you) and demand to speak with the MP Company Commander. The MP CO is, of course, going to back his guys, and say something stupid like "the law is the law" and there will be a big shouting match between an Infantry Captain and an MP Captain, and it will be wildly entertaining... probably worth getting arrested and spending the night in jail just to see. After it is all over, the CO will have you report to your SL who will laugh about it, and maybe make you do 100 push ups for getting arrested. No one will ever tell you not to carry your knife though. Also, the MP Commander will, after defending the actions of his soldier, likely go to that arresting soldier and say "Dude, WTF is your problem?"

Again, this is a highly unlikely scenario, but if it does occur, then the above result is what will happen.

Don't worry too much abut this stuff. Keep your head down. Do what you're told, and don't piss anyone off. Ask your TL questions - DO NOT ask questions of the E-4's in your platoon. They will give you FUD just to **** with you.

Daily carry my Microtech Scarab with no problems other than everyone wanting to play with it. Only time I was asked to not carry was when I MOB'd outta fort Dix.

Thanks. I tread carefully at the moment because I don't really want a small little folder ending my young career abruptly. But it seems like in the infantry environment, it's definitely normal as I was looking at everyone's pockets and they all had clips. Just to make sure, I asked my TL and he said it was okay.

I was always told the blade had to be under 3" when I was on Oki. I don't know of anyone who's ever been given any grief for carrying a knife - though I assume if you're acting retarded you'll find out the rules of carrying one!

Best thing is to just call up PMO and ask what the regs are (and what the appropriate base order is for it).
