Random question. How many Jumps does a infantry soldier in the 82nd get in a typical non deployment year? I know this really varies but Im curious for a ball park answer. My friends little brother is just finishing AIT and is heading that way. I also wonder how you feel about guys that go through airborne school but not to an Airborne unit. Still Airborne soldiers?

Thats a Negative Ghostrider, soldiers who go through Airborne School and then on to a leg unit are NOT paratroopers. They are Airborne Qualified. five jump chumps we call them. Those who wear the red beret are paratroopers, and there is more to it than just graduating jump school. Jump and assembles, week long missions that begin with finding out where the **** you are, tactics, mindset, confidence, camraderie. Its not the same in a Leg unit. Airborne School is not overly difficult, and for most of the guys who graduate the course and go to a leg unit not of thier own choice, I cannot hold that against them, but those who know the trials and commitment of wearing the red beret will always hold a special place in my heart.

As to your other question about how often Infantrymen jump, you have to make at least one jump a quarter to stay on Airborne Status. Many units jump once a month, and it becomes just another box to check in order to get your jump pay. Others are lucky to get slots just to stay qualified. At Ft. Polk the OPS group *******s (bunch of E-7's and O-4's who are worthless) used to bump a lot of 509th 11B's from jumps just so they could rack up their stats. Many units jump into every field problem (those can be a blast, let me tell you)
