    Fort Drum NY?

Just found out i'll be stationed in Ft. Drum NY after MP BOLC in JAN 2013. I really don't know much about this place besides the fact that it's suppose to be super cold and it snows a lot. Could you guy's fill me in on the good, bad, & ugly about this place? Thanks.

P.S.- And I thought the Army was going to be my ticket away from anti 2nd amendment gun laws

    Sucks for you!

I got out of the Army in 2010... and I was stationed there for 4 yrs!.... Hope you like the snow.... Well its not all bad here are some goods and bads of the area..

    Good:
Summer time its beautiful in the area of FD
    Fishing
water sports if your into it. ( Lake Ontario is like 20 MI outside of Watertown)
    Snowboarding
    Bow Hunting
    Hunting
Golden Unicorn( its a restaurant in black river area... they are famous for their #4 pancake special...)
Crazy legs saloon ( right out sight Mt.B Gate)
Danos Pizza( they have a good buffet that we used to go to all the time)
    Nice size PX

    BAD:
Snow( and lots of it... they get what is called Lake effect)
PT in negative temps with windchills that are ungodly
    Gun laws
State Troopers have a hard on for soldiers

To be honest, Drum was not that bad. I got there in September of 2007 and deployed to Iraq for 15mo. I volunteered so I wouldn't have to spend a winter there...Well we returned to drum in Feb of 2009... and was waiting in the snow outside of the Mcgrath gym for our welcome home ceremony. I just hate being cold.. so the harsh winters took some getting used to.

    What is your MOS?

I was an MP assigned to the 91st MP Battalion 511th MP Co.

If you got any questions just send me a PM.

Thanks for the info. Doesn't sound too bad if I can get past the cold weather. I'm an outdoors kind of person so it sounds like I might like it. I'm an MP so i'll be in the 91st as well.

Yeah you will be ok. They issue you a bunch of Cold weather gear, so just be ready for that... but yeah if you like the outdoor then you will love Drum.. just have to take the time to explore the area.

Also the mosquitoes are terrible during the summer, at least out at the ranges. Not a whole lot around, WaterTown is small, although Syracuse isn't too terribly far away, right down the 81, great when college is in session. Same with Oswego. If you like beer, there is Custom Brew Craft just outside of Rochester although I think their beers are stocked in Wegmans grocery stores.

Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester and Syracuse is a must.

Oh god.. the mosquitoes at Drum... I had put those things out of my mind... they get through your netting...

Watch out for the Watertown Buffaloes.

I went to Syracuse University...not to far from there...lot's to do there though it does get very cold. If you are craving some BBQ get yourself to Syracuse and go to Dinosaur BBQ...it is truly amazing! I know a bunch of stuff to do around that area. Send me a PM if you want!
