Go to your local VA Clinic, ask to speak with the member rep.

The rep will be able to walk you through the whole process. It varies from person to person with regards to what you need to back up your claim.

I did the paperwork online. Filing is electronic, and effective the day you click SEND. it will take them a few months to get back to you for an exam appointment and any blanks can be filled in at that time. The key is to file as soon as you can, even with incomplete info.

Your County Veterans Services Officer can help you ile.

Your local DAV may also be able to assist.

I second the DAV, they were extremely helpful and friendly with me. Working on 6 months wait here, not too anxious about it though.

Third (fourth) endorsement for the DAV.

Disabled American Vets, its a non for profit that acts as a advocate for vets dealing with the VA. They basically make sure all the paperwork is done correctly, and stay on top of the paper pushers over at the VA to make sure you don't fall thru the cracks and get forgotten.

Go to VA.gov this will help with questions you may have, as well as get you started with your process. As one of the guys already stated you can file online, do it now to have your start date. The VA takes along time to get you in , exam and complete the claim.

Bring copies of any Military sick call paper work, or from a Civilian doctor that you have seen since getting out. I finally got my neck added in after 9yrs, by submitting my Jump Log, MRI's a yr after getting out, and current MRI for the condition.

I am a life time member of DAV, however I use the PVA as my advocate here in San Diego.

You have to be persistent with them, currently I have had a claim in since Mar of 2011. I had surgery in June for a service connected condition, for that I will get 100% for the recovery period. I still haven't received compensation for that. However my compensation will be back dated to those dates.

The VA is currently attempting to get all Vietnam era Veterans up to date with claims, so mine and other's have to wait till that happens.

So file online, get yours started and wait till you get your appointment. Good Luck.

There may be a rep there. If not, try your VA regional office.

Here is one that is helping our guys/gals through another program. You needed to be disabled after 2001 so us old timers still have to keep putting into that lost cause.
