Question for those retired from Military

OK so close friend of mine had a strange message left from her Mother on answering machine.

Mother states she needs personal information from her daughter like SSN, and other information for her new husband to fill out his military retirement paperwork? So to repeat, some dude who has no relationship to his wives adult children wants their personal information.

Now from hearing stories about this guy I doubt he was ever military and if he was he would of left many years ago (he is 65). I told my friend I thought they had to sign up for retirement when they left service? Since he has been married for the last 5 years to her mom, has never been able to hold a job past 1 month because they discover he has lied about his credentials/abilities and he is just now coming up with this military thing I find it highly suspicious. Not to mention the Mother has some cardiac medical issues right now and is not thinking too clearly, so I think the psycho is using her being impaired to scam her kids.

Now my friends Father is retired military and I'm also wondering if the new husband is trying to get information on the bio dad?

I recently retired from the military and I would need some more information to be able to answer your question accurately. The quick answer would be no, he does not need any info from her to complete his retirement application unless he is going to claim her as a dependent or going to add her on his medical benefits plan.

If he completed 20 years active duty he would start drawing his benefits when he left the service. If it is National Guard, Reserve or a combination of the above, he would be eligible to draw his benefits at age sixty.

You state he is 65. It does not seem likely that with his employability you speak of that he would wait 5 years before applying for his benefits. If he is, he would only need it if he was designating your friend as a beneficiary for his survivor benefit plan or as a dependent.

Thanks John for response. He has no reason to be designating my friend as a beneficiary. They have never met and hardly talk to each other except when her Mother is having medical problems and that usually doesn't end well. And it is not just her but her sisters as well he is trying to get the mom to get information from. He has children of his own, but apparently they are estranged and have not spoken in years. And he made sure to get the Mother to move far away from any of her Daughters because he didn't like them.

Guy doesn't realize most everything he claims can be checked on the internet in today's world. So far his past professional claims have been; Forensic Medical Doctor, Physicians Assistant, Histologist, and another lab job I can't even remember. Each one my friend and I have looked up and the only professional license he has ever held was as a cosmetologist back in 1983 in New Jersey. So suddenly military is his new thing, after a conversation about wild hogs and suddenly he pipes up "I was a sniper in the military".... Course he has been on several forums saying he was a Pathologist for the army (kinda big jumps between medical professional to sniper?????). He has a unique name and uses the same email address as his handle for forums so it's not to hard to track down what all he has been up to and saying for several years and it's wildly different depending on the personality of the month. The sad thing is the Mother believes all his claims and has stopped talking to her daughters several times because they won't call this new guy "dad" (mind you the youngest daughter is 29 years old).

So friend is just going to confront her mother again and tell her "no" on the personal info. We were just looking for some knowledgeable military folks to help back up what we already pretty much know/suspect.

While I haven't retired from the military... yet.... I know enough about it to say with a 99.99% probability of being right that this guy is full of crapola.

John is spot on with his evaluation and given how old the kids are other than for a beneficiary, there is no other reason he would need that kind of info.

If his name is that unique, you could always contact the VA and ask for info. If they give you any static make something up, that he is sick, dying, suffering from dementia and you want to get his affairs in order.

If this guy is pulling some scam and taking advantage of the mother, then maybe you would want him jail.

Also talk to the police.

Yeah he was fishing, friend confronted him about his BS stories they got into big shouting match over the phone. Oh well guess she has one less xmas present to buy this year as the mother is now not talking to her.

Couple of simple things you can ask him.

Ask to see his DD214. Ask to see his retired I.D. card.
