    Beale AFB

    Hello,

I was wondering whats the atmosphere like at this base? And housing options, I was told to look at Yuba city or Sac suburbs as options.

    Thanks,

My coworker used to be in the reserves at that base. She told me it's a chill place. I used to live in Butte County and am currently in Sac County. Housing is easily found in both counties. I'm currently renting a room in Elk Grove for $300/month as I go to school. If you live in Sac County, the drive is only about 30-45 min to base if you take I-5 route.

Yeah I'm from San Diego, so I'm trying to learn as much about the area as I can. 30 mins ain't bad from Sac county.

I need to rent a place that allows dogs, so hopefully land lords aren't as picky like down here in SD.

I worked at Beale for a year, lived in Roseville. Most of my coworkers lived in Roseville/Rocklin (I-65) or Sacramento (I-70). Even a strong amount of active duty made the drive. Yuba/Marysville don't have much to offer in terms of a nice place to live. If you like more rural settings check out Grass Valley. Coming from SD I'd best recommend Rocklin/Roseville as those are the happening yuppy areas nearby Sacramento.

I was stationed at Beale three times over my career. I also worked there as DoD contractor. That base is mainly how I ended up originally coming to Cali, and retiring here. It definelty has a different feel to it then other bases. Go to Travis, and the base has a very upbeat operational tempo to it. Beale seems to be more "laid back" if you can describe it as such. In the late 80's when I was first stationed there, it was very busy base. Not so much now. If you are looking for a place to live, look around Roseville and Rocklin, and commute up and down Hwy 65.

Dragon ladies are still there Must been amazing to see the SR71's take off full afterburner into the dusk there. Wow

I worked in both the 1st SRS (SR-71 operations squadron) and in 9th OMS "Blackworld" (U2 and SR-71 maintenance squadron), the first time I was stationed at Beale from 86' to 88'. It was a pretty trippy experience for a teenager. I still have the U.S. flag that they flew in an SR-71 at Mach 3+ at over 80,000 feet for me (a farewell present as I was getting stationed in Korea.)

I also have a lithograph of the SR-71 that all the pilots and RSO's signed when I transferred from the ops squadron to the maintenance unit. It was one of the more unique missions I got to be involved with during my career. I miss the SR's. Those were some bad azz planes.

I just moved to Rocklin from San Diego last month. As others have said there's much more to do in the Rocklin/Roseville area than there is in Yuba City. Several apartments on the east end of Sunset blvd with easy access to the 65.
They do have a shooting range on Beale and allow hunting on base. Firearms can be ordered tax free from the base rod and gun club. Spenceville wildlife area borders on the east and has a public shooting range that goes out to 300+yds.
Send me a PM if you have questions about a specific area or apartment complex.

Beale AFB is what it is, very small base with half a## facilities. As others have stated Rocklin/Roseville area is youre best bet for housing, you can rent cheaper closer too base and pocket more BAH but the Yuba/Marysville area is crap. The people at the rod and gun are cool but charge like $4.00 an hour to use the wasp invested range, as far as gun sales you can get stuff cheaper at sportsmans warehouse in Rocklin. Sac valley and Lincoln gun club arent to bad to shoot at, Spencville is a joke and should be closed. Overall it is what you make of it just like any other assignment, after seven years were finally PCSing and im not going to miss anything or anybody here. Good luck
