DD 214 (service record on CD)

Just some info on getting a DD 214

I recently bought a home. Went searching for my DD214 and could not find it. I faxed the information required to get one to the national archives. Then got a response from them that they did not have my service record yet NPC (Navy Personnel Command) still had it.

I called NPC and asked about getting my DD214 and got asked if I had a CD of my service record. I said no so they sent me one.

If you got out of the Marine Corps or Navy recently I imagine you can do the same. Gets you your whole service record to you.

I ended up with two. NPC sent one CD and the national archives forwarded my request to them so they sent a second CD. One is now locked away in my safe and the other is out where I can use it.

Makes it real easy, you can just print a 214 when/if you need it. I would imagine if it was good enough for a VA loan it will be good enough for about anything.

I would suggest you go to the courthouse and have your DD214 entered into record then it is available when ever you need and safe from flood, fire, and theft.

The way this thing is encrypted and passworded theft is not really an issue.

It isn't just a slap the CD in and you can read your record. Yeah someone could hack it, but if they want your info that badly they are going to get the info with or without a CD.

If you want to use the courthouse you can but it is easier and cheaper to just print one on using the computer and printer at home IMO.

I did that when I first got it, never tried to go get a copy, but I should be able to if I ever need to.

not a good idea. once entered at the courthouse it becomes public record, veiwable by anyone and a good way to become a victim of id theft.

By whole service record you mean more information is available than just your DD214? I noticed that none of my deployments are on my DD214. So are all of your orders from TDY, PCS, Medical Records, Honorable Discharge, and so on all included? Or is it just the DD214.

yes, i was told not to take my dd214 to the county courthouse/clerk to be recorded. too much ppi (personel protective information) on it. iirc the va rep is the one who told me.

When I left active duty the first time in 1997, we were told in TAMP/TAP class to file our DD214's with the county clerk. Around 2005 I got both an email and letter from the VA saying that they no longer advocate the practice, and that all veteran service organizations (DAV, VFW, AL) had been instructed to no longer suggest filing. I couldn't find the official VA message online, but if you google the subject you'll see plenty of info on it. Some counties have been proactive, and do not release DD214's as public record....but they're the minority.

It was a complete archive of my service record. NO medical. If it made it into your service record hard copy it should be there.

Just a quick look I see reenlistment, 214's, evals, clearances, SGLI, decorations and awards, schools and training, paperwork all the way back to MEPS. OF course only what got put in is going to be there.
