How does one get schools in the Army?

I ship out to OSUT in March, MOS 19D. What is the process of requesting and getting schools? Half of the guys in the recruiting office, the Sgts that is, are Infantry and were telling me 11 B/C guys get priority over everyone else, although I think this is true, what are my odds on getting extra stuff outside my general MOS field training? My number one concern is becoming a Squad Designated Marksmen. Some one on here mentioned the Army has a SDM school but I couldn't find much information on it. Thanks.

First off I would like to say good MOS choice. I am a 19D as well. In some instances at the end of OSUT soldiers will be asked if they would like to attend the "normal" schools such as Airborne and Air Assault. That doesnt happen all of the time tho. But seeing how the Armor School where you will be attending OSUT has moved to Ft. Benning, where the Airbourne and an Air Assault school is located i would imagine it would be alot easier now. Also, it depends on what your first Duty Station is. If the Army needs you in an Airborne unit(such as the 82) or Air Assault (such as the 101st) then you will attend that school "enroute". Other schools like Ranger School, Squad Designated Marksman, Javelin Gunners Course, Small Arms Expert Course and ones like that will be handled once you get to your unit. Providing there are slots and those are needs of the unit. I hope this may be some help for you. If you have any questions feel free to ask. RECON!

im leaving for osut at benning on tuesday (11x) i want eventually be an 18b but im pacient and dont plan on that for years anyways what schools would you recomend in the mean time to prepare SF selection?

Depending on what unit you go to will depend on what schools are offered. I am with the 25th ID and they don't send people to a lot of schools. They did have Sniper school in Hawaii and another school or two came there before we deployed. They didn't send very many people though. One of the main ways to get schools is to re-enlist for it or if you go to a high speed unit.

I hear that after a deployment they have some school slots to give out.
