    MOS Help

Okay I am an E4 going active duty, and these are the MOS's available according to the HRC Business Rules memo. A few months ago when I submitted my paperwork, I had my mind set on 25R Visual Equipment Maintainer Operator and it's no longer on the list. So anyone have experience with these MOS's? My second choice was 68X Mental Health. OH I'm currently an engineer if that helps.

15E Unmanned Aircraft Systems Repairer, 15Q Air Traffic Control Operator, 15W Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator, 25S Satellite Communication Systems Operator Maintainer, 35F Intel Analyst, 35P Crypto Linguist, 68X Mental Health Specialist, or 91F Small Arms/Artillery Repairer

    Thanks in advance!

First choice: 15W. This is the way of the future. The feds, local police, and military all have uses for it. Get the MOS, get the flight hours, make bank later.

Second choice: 15E for all the same reasons. This may actually net you more money after you are done wearing the uniform.

Third choice: 35P. Lucrative jobs after the military. This is one of the more important ways to help defend the country, especially this day and age with everything being wired.

Fourth choice: 35F. Another great way to make money after the military and a great way to help support those on the front lines (and be with them depending on what uit you are with).

Good luck in your decision. This is how I would do it if I were in your situation.

I was in aviation units for a couple years so I have an obeserver's point of view on several of the 15 series. UAVs are the future in aviation, MOST of the mechanics I encountered that had a brain worth its while either applied for the 160th SOAR or went Warrant to be a pilot. The type of people you'll likely work with won't be the top of the stack.
15W will give you golden experience and you'll get your pilot's license, I had a suitemate in the barracks that got 14/15 months of AIT (advanced training) for 15W until they found out he couldn't get a high enough security clearance. So pilot's license and security clearance is a plus.
15Q sounds familiar to 15P, which was Flight Operations Specialist. Not a winner of a job, it offers good experience if you want to work in an air traffic control job but doesn't offer a whole heckuva a lot.
35F was/is my job. I did it well and I have been contracting for over a year now. I love the work, you will see a lot of good analysts who are not good soldiers, in many ways the culture of an intelligence analyst is counter to the military culture. If you could suck it up for 4 or more years and then get out the jobs are there (may not be when GWOT ends). You get a high security clearance, with the engineering background you'd be golden. It takes a special kind of person to do this job, I thrive on reading hundred of reports a day and being a walking encyclopedia. We are also known as powerpoint rangers. I am looking to get out of this career field as I want to live in CA and 90% of the jobs are east coast. I love the work but personal reasons have me looking for new options.
35P, The whipping boy of the intel community. Hope you get a language that matters, likely Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Chinese. If you have a flair for languages knock yourself out.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Army does not have any UCAVs, Air Force Pilots (officers) fly the "fun" UAVs if you don't mind sitting in a tight enclosed space for extended periods of time in the Nevada desert. Most of the UAV pilots I have encountered are grounded fixed wing pilots, not as exciting.
Army UAVs are smaller and kinda lame...

There is an E-4 and E-6 that come in at night normally and operate UAV's. I am sure that is their MOS. I don't much about their job but I have had to work with them on occasion. If you have any questions you want me to ask them, let me know. From what I can tell, it seems like an easy job. The UAV is launched at a different FOB and then they guide it into our area and do their thing and then send it back.

So let me get this straight, your still a civilian, but they will sign you on as an E-4, so IE you have a college degree? If you have a degree go officer, its a much better life.

Let me see if i can give you the wealth of my experience with those MOSes i know. However, if you told us your goals in life that would help much more.

                15Q Air Traffic Control Operator
Very good job you will often end up working shift work. However, there are requirements that you have a certain amount of sleep hours at night so their not going to work you ragged. Furthermore, those guys often end up sitting in the tower playing on their laptops or what not most of the time. Pretty chill job. Also, if you wish to be an air traffic controller when you get out, your pretty well set up for that, which from my understanding pays quite well.

                15W Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator
Another not too bad job. You have the same requirements to get a certain amount of hours in sleep a night. Furthermore the work is pretty chill, you sit in a trailer and fly a plane. However, I'm not quite sure on how well set up you would be when you got out.

                35F Intel Analyst
I really hate this job, huge let down. If you think your going to do something cool and find bin laden, your wrong. Most of time you end up in a S2 shop doing paperwork, IE security clearances. Furthermore, leadership often thinks that you don't do any thing important so you end up on nearly every detail that comes up. In addition, the MOS is really top heavy at the moment so promotions have slowed down. In the off chance you don't end up in a S2 shop and end up in a high level headquarters, you will usually spend your time making power point slides and writing articles that no one reads. The only good thing is its not too hard to find a job once u get out. If you want an idea what its like to be an Intel analyst watch office space while your picking up cigarette butts.

As an 11B i would say it depends on what your main goal is. Do you want to kill bad guys/Kick doors in/ get to go to cool schools/ and get the best gear and drink beer for 3-5 years or do you want away to make your resume look better when you are done. Just some food for thought. The only Job I would ever do beside 11B is fly Birds and that is if i can get a warrant packet in. Also do you have a degree ?

(Before i get every ones angry posts. I realize that other MOS's get to do cool stuff)

I guess to clarify, I am in right now. I am currently an E4 in the reserves. I have gotten my paperwork approved to go from Army Reserve to Active duty.

But as an update, I am an exception to this message, as I have less than 179 days in active duty with my BCT and AIT so I can go into any MOS as NPS and keep my E4. I am currently a 12N (21E Formerly) Horizontal Engineer but I scored a 87 on the ASVAB and I kinda want to be able to pick my own job this time around, instead of getting put into an MOS like my career counselor did when I was fresh, 100% civilian.

I kinda have my mind set on 25R, but if thats a no-go then I'll settle with 19D which was my original 'dream' MOS before I joined, or 12B which I used to see back at FLW. I really dont want to go through that Drill Sgt bs again though, esp. with my mindset I have now since I've been there already. And those MOS's have thier OSUT so I'd be back with drill sgts at one point or another of that reclass training. And I bet they hate reclasses. Lol

15E ( Will get your foot in the door for robotics. This will get you a very lucrative job when you get out. Two guys that contract at my work started out doing this they both are retired military and work in the robotic industry now making about 4 to 5 times my pitiful yearly income.)

15W ( I've actually done this one for a little bit. Not the MOS the job. A friend of mine let me fly it for a few hours while he got some shut eye. Anytime I saw someone doing
something shady I would make it dip low. The sound of it sends them running everytime.)

91F ( If you want to know weapons this is the MOS of choice. You will know small arms and crew served weapons like no other. Downside to this is expect long ... long ... long work hours. You will be working when everyone else is on libbo. Plus side is you won't be in the field a majority of the time because your to busy working. Getting a job with one of the Big Defense/Firearms contractors, LE agencies or just going into gun smithing with this type of experience will be alot easier to get into)

25S is a great job. If you want something to do when you get out, you'll be set up for life.
I had an E-3 working for me, who was over weight. He was on the verge of being kicked out for failure to maintain height and weight standards, but the commander decided to let him run out the last 6 months on his contract.
He went from Active duty, back to Kuwait as a civilian, making more than 200 grand a year! Just for working in an air conditioned office in Kuwait. He lives off base, gets a vehicle, and has a very cushy life style.
Satellites are the future, and there are so few people that have experience with them, and so many companies that need experienced techs.

No offense to any combat arms guys, but the only fields that utilize those skills are very specific, and usually have a shelf life, if your knees go out on a jump, you're a broken shooter, with even less opportunities.

The signal field is a great place to be right now, there are a lot of new high speed units that are desperately seeking signal soldiers. White House Communications, Asymmetric Warfare Group, Rangers, and a few more that I'm not sure I can mention on a public forum.

                        Good luck bro

Small arms and artillery repair sounds great to me. Look at all the parts you can pilfer, lol.
I would do something you can use when you ETS. Whatever you do, learn something. Thank you for your service.
