Receiving dental care through the VA? Possible to use external provider?

I have a service-connected disability. Apparently I am eligible to receive dental care through the VA.

Has anyone here utilized the VA for dental care? How is it?

Also, I would ideally like to use a dentist of my own choosing and be reimbursed by the VA. Is that possible? If so, how does one go about it?

I don't currently have a dental crisis or emergency need. I just want to get it all lined up and see what is available.

    Thanks.

I had dental care at the Brentwood VA Hospital in West Los Angeles back in the late 80's. The care was first rate. The VA made sure everything was taken cared of with my teeth. Over a period of two months, I had an exam, X-rays, a cavity filled in, a Wisdom Tooth taken out by the Oral Surgeon and my teeth cleaned before the VA released me.
The Dentist, his assistant, the Oral Surgeon, his Intern and the Dental Hygienist were the BEST!

Dental care was available to disabled vets less than 100% at the discretion of the medical facility for a short period of time. Mostly during the time Clinton was trying to expand the VA into universal health care. Now if you are 100% disabled you might get it. I was getting some dental work when the policy changed back and was told they will pull a bad tooth but not repair anything.
