Mind games. Drill sergeant ordered us to position of attention one day, then the next day position of a tent peg. It's Simon Says. listen close!

          Before basic training:

          Workout, diet, run, repeat.

          During basic training:

          Don't volunteer.

          STFU and be a ghost.

          After basic training:

          Don't get arrested.

          All phases of training:

Don't talk about wanting to be an 18 series, just do it.

Learn to pay attention to detail, Kevin. You are supposedly in college but you're typing like you are still in high school chatting on Myspace. Not caring here (it's only an online message board, but look at your spelling, grammar, typos, syntax, etc.) could lead to you being lazy and making stupid, more costly mistakes down the line. If your 300m target is to be 18-series, you need to pay attention to detail, at least that's what I hear them tell people all the time. This will not only help you in BCT, but further down the line.

Good luck! Never quit! Now go do push-ups!

Speaking of that, my doc just came in and gave my roommate and I a tourniquet class. I gave him some cheez-its and now he is happy as can be.

Don't be a kiss *** and listen to your NCO's. They'll teach you everything you need to know. They will also see through your BS; so don't. Learn to sleep at the drop of a hat. You never know when you will get a second. That will be learned with time. I watched a Corporal from the 101st fall asleep with a 4 minute break for water during a ruck march at Mountain Warefare School. His heart rate hadn't even come down yet. He was my hero.

know your rank structure, ' General Orders' (army only has three so know them), don't lock you knees when standing at attention ( I've seen too many soldiers pass out, esp on hot days), know how to ' properly' do the push-ups. Practice your salute's in the mirror and when to salute ( if you see something shine on a uniform salute it haha). Learn how to spit shine boots, KIWI, water (or spit) and cotton balls yeah baby USE IT! Pay attention at the grenade range...there is a reason why the DI's are little nicer to you there. Most are calmer than Hindu cows. Expect alot bull**** around you, alot of waiting for whatever. Change your socks or use foot powder on road marches, your feet are the most important part of a soldiers body. Breathing, good sight target and trigger squeeze are key Marksmanship. There is alot more but this should be good enough.

I see that your located in Sacramento. I know the Greenhaven Recruiting station has a recruit P.T. every Thursday at 4PM. I also know that the Navy does runs at Southside park around 5 on Tuesdays. Lots of local help with P.T. if your willing to get some.

You'll figure it out, like we all did when we went through. Only advice I can give is don't ever, ever let the words "I can't" slip out of your mouth until you take your boots off for good.
