A lot of times it depends on your level of education, if you were in JROTC, career (AFSC), length of enlistment. But nothing is written in stone, it will depend on completion of basic and your technical school. If they promise the rank, that should be in your enlistment contract along with the requirements. If you enlist , whether it's in the USAF or any other service, make the best of it and good luck.

You'll get promoted to e-3 at the end of basic training.

As a 7 level Crew Chief I can say that if you DO decide to become a crew chief be aware, you won't always fly. I work an airframe that couldn't even dream of having a flying crew chief. My advice? Load master or Flight engineer.

Usually a flight engineer is a mechanic of some type before becoming an engineer, often a crew chief. You need some practical knowledge of the aircraft's systems to operate/react to them correctly.
                      I'd also be a loadmaster.

Flight Engineer is a dying breed, newer planes don't have them.

flightline crew chief (kinda redundant...), cargo or tanker plane. c130, c17, kc135, kc10... something with troop seats. i used to fly all the time (till i got stuck in a back shop on my current base...). alaska, florida, washington, hawaii, italy, portugal, texas, new york, england to name a few..... no fighters or drones..... (cant fit the extra golf clubs in the back seat......)

Helicopter crew chiefs fly with the aircraft.

                            So do gunners.

I'd recommend load master especially for C-130's H or J model. You fly around a lot and sometimes to very nice places. Look into it.
