    No more buying guns

I've posted this in the FFL site with no help, so I thought I'd try it here.

I am active duty Navy and my wife is the same. When I retire in 2 years I now become a dependant/spouse, and I can keep my residency in Illinois as per the Mil spouse residency act, but I not being under orders and with a retiree id card cannot purchase any more guns unless I board a plane and buy them in my home state.
Some one suggested getting a state id, but doesn't that just confuse the whole residency issue, and I'm not sure I even can get one with out surrendering my state drivers license.

You married guy does you wife face this issue?

Why would it confuse the issue? If you get a California ID and make your permanent residence here then you are a resident. Can you think of any good reason to remain a resident of your previous state? Yes, you would have to give up your other state's DL, but what is the problem with that?
What do you mean my birth certificate expired?

Possibly taxes, although that may have changed. When I was active duty you could claim your home state for tax purposes and that saved me some money.

If you get a state issued ID without using your old DL as a form of ID, then they can't do anything with it, now can they? Your mil ID and birth cert should be good enough for an ID card.

It still makes perfect sense to maintain an out-of-CA residency while on active duty - you can still avoid state taxes in your home state (I'm a PA resident but stationed in CA).
You can't get a state ID card with a current valid out of state DL, you'll have to surrender it.
When you retire, you won't be able to purchase a handgun in CA anymore unless you change residency to CA.
If you become a bona fide CA resident, your military retirement pay becomes taxable in CA.

Show them your passport and birth cert to DMV to get a CA ID not CDL and everything is going to be alright.

You could just buy all of the guns you would want to cover the span until your wife retires.

                  PERMANENT RESIDENT NEVER !!!!
It's only a matter of time before this state takes guns away altogether.

The present company used to be what California was all about. The problem is that the wackos from your state and others came and took it from us.

If she is active duty then she should be able to purchase guns in California, just as you do now. Since all property in a marriage is shared, what's hers is yours. I don't see the problem unless she won't buy guns.

Just get a drivers license for the state you are currently in. Illinois has high taxes just like California. So what are you going through all the trouble of keeping your residency for? Especially if it is inconvenient as it is proving to be.

They made a change recently to allow spouses the same benefits as active duty.....meaning that when a spouse gets a job in a state that they dont have residence in, they dont have to switch their residency over like they used to. The spouse has the same protections as active duty....including residency and taxes (no more paying state tax to a state you arent a resident of).

Seems to me, that as long as your wife has PCS orders to California, you should be able to use those, your marriage license, and local mail to buy guns.

Talk to legal though, find a LCDR or above and pose your question. They might have documentation to make the process easier.
I keep my Illinois residency too. Even maintain my FOID.

I'm with you Kermit but, there should be, doesn't mean there is and realistically how many spouses(mostly women) are even concerned with this problem.
I discussed it with my local FFl and I could talk to legal all day if the FFL doesn't accept it I'm screwed.
My solution is a simple one and if you could pass this on, I don't care who gets the credit.
Simply put the spouse on the orders
