Until you get your Citizenship you can only server 8 years, but if you get deployed to a war zone, you will automatically get it.

when you enlist you can coos to do 2, 3, or 4 years active then the rest Inactive or Reserves (National Guard) for combat MOS.
2yrs - you will most likely stay stateside.
3yrs - you will most likely spend 1yr in Korea.
4yrs - you will most likely spend 2yrs in Germany.
This is of course if your unit is not deployed to the middle east....

Thanks for joining you will Love it...
2yrs you will stay stateside? In the off chance you find a two year contact, you will probably still deploy. I was with my unit in garrison maybe three months before we deployed. So, about 5 months of Basic and AIT, a few weeks in Garrison, 6 weeks at NTC (pre-deployment training in CA) and then about two months in garrison again. So you come back from deployment, 90 day stabilization period and pretty soon your two years are up.

You can and will get stationed just about anywhere. I got stationed in Hawaii. A lot of people went to Germany and Korea and Texas. You don't have much of a say in where you go but when you find out where you are going sometimes you can trade with other people. I had a friend that tried it in AIT and he got denied though.

Medic seems like a good job. Most of the lower enlisted medics out here are with line troops and they roll-out on missions everyday. Some of them are stuck in the aid station though. In garrison you will help with combat life saver courses and take care of soldiers at sick call in the mornings, things like that.

I know at least 5 people that failed out of medic AIT. They all failed the EMT test and that is why they failed.

The army is great. I have been in for 14 months and I think I am going to do 20 years. If you work hard and do the right thing you will make rank pretty quick. Don't get stuck as an E-4 for years and years and don't get stuck as an E-5 for ever either. My first line as been E-5 for like 8 years. Don't get involved with all the b/s. It is easy to excel in the army but it is also easy to get in trouble in the army. Good luck and have fun.

Keep in mind, if you are married this is a hard lifestyle. By the time I am done with this deployment, I will have been in the army about 24 months and of those 24 months, I will have spend about 4 months total with my wife. Just something to keep in mind. It takes a toll on your wife just as much as it does you. Many people in the army get divorced.

I seriously advise against being a paramedic. Pay is very low.

With your experience in the military you can get any entry level position in the government and it'll pay more than a paramedic.

It's cool if it's your thing but long term it's gonna suck when you are living paycheck to paycheck.

Thanks for your opinion, Beagle. Can you be more specific on the government job? Official job title might help.

And just to update, I am currently studying for my ASVAB... hopefully I'll do well.

haha good stuff. I went to North back in the day too... Call a recruiter or stop by an office and talk to them. Or even go to North and talk to Sgt. Graham from the ROTC program if they still have it. I was in ROTC when I went there and he is a real good guy. He can hook you up with someone.

I'll be taking the asvab next wednsday.
