    Private Military Contractors.

Any of you former military types ever employed with a private military contractor? I am being offered a job with one of them, any experiences or opinions to share?

I am, I do intel for the Air Force. Although due to the way they are running things myself and about 50-60% of the contractors are looking to leave in the near future. Depending on what you do/looking to do and how your site lead runs things makes all the difference. I am hoping to find myself in AFG in the near future.

What are the reasons for that?

Unstable schedules, civilian leadership rolling over to the customers desires, overbearing customer, and exercising the best part about being a civi, cause I don't have to stand for it anymore. It is best that I not name the location or the company at this point though.

I understand. I've heard of those concerns a lot.

I'll second that. Govies suck. At least the ones I've run into. They can't make it in the civie world. I'm not going back to contracting, ever. LOL.

My buddy's the boss for all of Afghanistan for one of the big contractor firms. Former Marine. It's a cool gig but at that level his deployments are measured in years. He makes bank but he was home 18 days all of last year!

That has to be rough if you have a family, but if the money was good enough I'd do it.

I have done a couple .gov contracts and they are good and bad. I did one with MPRI in Kuwait/Iraq, and another in the DC area for DHS. I am currently on contract with USPS. .gov pays well once you negotiate all the obstacles.

It's worth a shot, give it a try. Unlike being a GI, you can walk away if you don't dig the scene.

That's what is attracting me to it. The money is really good compared to what I have made previously in my life. Plus I don't have to give them 4 or 5 years of my life. If I may ask, in your experience is it easy to get other contracts, with the same or a different company, after you have done one?

USPS hires PMCs? Is this Detroit?

I am a contractor. I'm currently in Afghanistan flying UAV's for the Marines. I'm former Navy, did 10 yrs, 10mo, and 26 days. No prior UAV experience.

I've been out here for almost six months, and when I'm done I'll have 4 months off. This is my second deployment with the company. First one was 4 months long, and I got 3 months off.

It's not too bad really. Great benefits, pay is awesome. With the time off I get, we can actually have somewhat of a life at home. Only bad thing really is not getting full pay during your off time. I Just save up what I need to live off of while deployed.
