I am thinking about enlisting and thought of something. When yall first enlisted, what did you do with all your stuff? About me: I will be 23 next week and am looking into 19D cav scout for the Army. I live on my own and have a fully furnished house. Now I plan to get rid of ALOT of my stuff prior, but need to keep alot too. Dont have family to store anything. So my question is, was anyone out there in that same boat? I am thinking about just renting a storage unit somewhere and putting all my stuff in there. But there goes about $150 a month... so was looking for any other ideas? thanks. Also, if any cavalry scouts out there wanna give me and advice or information, that would be greatly apprciated as well. thanks

hmmm... you live alone... do you rent or own... well, thats besides the point... maybe find a trustworthy friend that wants to move out or just move... have them live in your home/appt. with all the furnishings, but just have them pay rent/mortgage. then when you come back, you will have a home to go to still. =)Comment

While you will generally be able (required, if you live in the barracks) to store your POWs (Privately Owned Weapons) in the arms room - once you are at your permanent party duty station, there is a problem during the transition into the service and your initial entry training.
btw - Expect to be hassled about storing your POWs.
One temporary storage solution for your initial entry training period would be to take your guns to a gunsmith for "cleaning and a checkup", and let the smith know where you'll be and how long you need them to be kept.
You could also ask your recruiter for advice on how and where to store your possessions (don't specify what they are) when you enlist.Last edited by joedogboy; 08-06-2010, 1:44 AM.Comment

my best friend was to go 7th cav scout, but somewhere in there he volunteered for the 82nd AB, STAY SCOUTS! dont swallow the kool-aid.
Yeah, Id keep the ammo and guns with a friend for the time being. Let the army store the rest of the stuff.
Take digital photos and close ups of EVERYthing, it does get damaged and lost. Make sure they dont pack the cat too. it happens.C-130Herk and AK-loverComment
