    It sucks.

    Good luck.

What he said. Make sure to get a laptop, that'll be your entertainment.

It's like camping with the Boyscouts except the targets are shooting at YOU and you have to get permission to shoot back.

The Afghans/Taliban/Al Qaida have been fight a war for decades. They fight guerrilla style and make pot shots and run. When cornered they will act like a spitting cobra and spray fire in any direction you come from. They are pretty well organized and very patient.

I say keep your head low, sights on target and listen to the "been there, done that" guys to keep are arse alive.

You don't. At least I wouldn't. You use it when you come back "home" to your FOB or outpost or whatever you get stuck in.

Are you going to Bagram/Kandahar or an outpost that is made of sandbags and hesco barriers? Big big big difference in locations and stuff at those locations. I say a laptop and supply of movies on a hardrive. Good luck.

Depends on where you are. You're not always in the field, you know.

Then definitely get a laptop Battery life is more important than power.

Also, have someone send you good socks and underwear on a regular basis, if you get stuck in some ****hole in the middle of nowhere. Although with your MOS you probably won't be, unless somebody really really dislikes you. Have some tan or brown duct tape with you, you'll thank me later.

So do the troops out in Afghanistan have wifi at most bases?
How do they do it, hot spot in one or two spots on base?

It all depends where you go sir.

Bagram and Kandahar are nice places to be stationed at as a signal officer. But even the little fire bases are well supported and "comfortable".

Bring an electric blanket and some yak trax (just in case you get to a cold place).

Don't buy anything really. You'll get issued more crap than you can shake a stick at. A laptop for movies and entertainment is a must.

And finally, make sure you have the ever present reflective belt.

                            Good luck sir!
