    Career Question

Right now I am an E-3 (E-4 in December) with almost a year in. I have about a year and half left until I finish my BA degree. I leave for my first deployment in a week or so. I am a 25U and I work in the S-6 shop. I'm 23 years old.

I am trying to figure out which route I want to go with my career. I like the idea of warrant officer but I don't want to be a commo warrant. I have been considering flight warrant but I don't know a whole lot about it. I have also been considering going to OCS once finish my degree. I have talked to many of the officers in my unit and they all said there is a lot of time behind a desk. I hate being behind a desk.

    What does you guys think?

Warrant since you hate office work. Going officer is in the name, officers work in an office. Plus warrants like to fall in the cracks of the army. I once had the misfortune of trying to get an CW4 to take a pt test when his last one was 2 years ago. It was an up hill struggle.

Personally i HATE flight warrants with a passion due to me time in an aviation unit. (I apologize if any one here is one) However, to be fair they do live a good life. We did VIP AVN in Germany and they routinely flew to places like Poland, Croatia, Greece and many more locations. We even flew the VP and President at one point.

I think your also leaving the ETS option out of your thought processes. With a degree and 25U time you will be relatively competitive in the civilian world.

Is there a reason you want to go career all ready? How long have you been in? I would assume between 1.5-2 years based on your rank. I don't know what kind of service obligation warrant requires, but OCS tact's on 3 years. If you go OCS after you gain the minimum 90 credits you will be done with your service obligation around your 5-6th year. (plenty of time to get out at that point)

Also one thing most military members don't seem to realize is that if you work for the federal government your military time transfers over. So just because you get out doesn't mean you wasted your time by serving (retirement wise)

Go special forces OCS. I hear you get to rappel from helicopters, spray from the hip, hang out with beautiful women and drive fast cars.

      That's what I hear anyways.

If you get 2 years enlisted under your belt them when you go officer you get the E step grade. O-1E, O-2E, etc.

You need 4 years E time for that.

I have been in for almost a year. I am strongly considering making it a career because it is very stable. Health care is taken care of, housing is paid for, and I don't have to worry about being fired. I don't really like my MOS and I hate working with computers. One of the main jobs outside the military for 25U is a contractor doing pretty much the same thing.

I like the idea of being an officer but I don't want to be stuck behind a desk doing paperwork.

I think by the time I finish my degree (1.5 to 2 years) I will have my mind made up and have my whatever packet filled out.

I have thought long and hard about going SF. I don't want to do that to my family though. To be an officer in SF, you have to be a Captain or 1 LT P.

I was on a training exercise in California earlier this year and the SF guys were on our FOB. They all had pretty long hair and rode 4-wheelers around all the time.
