I live in the Sacramento area and a friend of mine just joined the Air Force and entered a program that will train him to be an air traffic controller. I spoke to him yesterday and he suggested I look into the Air Force Reserves. It has only been about 5 months since he shipped out for basic training, so he doesn't have many of the details I'm looking for. I'm hoping some of you out there can give me some more information before I speak to a recruiter to get their side of the story (because I know the recruiters never give you the whole story
).
My situation: 24yo male, college graduate with BA in Biology, currently working part time while I search for a "real" full-time job related to my degree, can afford to quit my current job in order to go to basic training if I need to. I also have over $20k in student loans that I need to pay back (can GI bill help me with paying back loans or only with future education?).
I'm currently not interested in working for the military full-time, mainly because I need to stay in Sacramento. I am getting married next year and my future wife just got her dream job in Sacramento. The reserves seems like it may be a good fit for me. I would love to serve in the military, and it sounds like the reserves would allow me to do that while also living and working in Sacramento.
Can someone out there give me their opinion on whether or not the reserves might be a good fit for me? Any information or suggestions regarding my specific situation would be greatly appreciated. Also general information on what type of benefits and reimbursement I would receive would be appreciated as well.
Thanks, guys!
