Depends on what you want to use it for.

If I want to finish my flight training I have to give up the 9/11 GI Bill forever. But If I want to finish my bachelors I can use both.

The 9/11 Bill will net me more cash in pocket than the MGIB.

I would call a VA Counselor and ask them. HERE is the FAQ's on the 9/11 Bill.

I asked the VA rep at my college the same thing. She basically said, if you are not a full time student, it doesn't really matter which one you choose. If you are full time, the post 9/11 is better as you also get E-5 w/dependents BAH.

I wouldn't rely on a rep. Talk to the VA first. For 9/11 it's pro-rata when your not full time just like MGIB. You still get BAH but at the reduced rate.

The 9/11 is worth more in the long run to you. If you take the MGIB and later decided you want to switch to 9/11 it ain't gonna happen. If your doing traditional schooling then I would not consider the MGIB route. Only if you need vocational training which is not a degree program should you be considering taking MGIB.

Call the VA and tell them your goals. They will not steer you wrong. Most VA employees are vets and have your interests in mind. They exist to help YOU. Call it job security.

Ok well I am a full time student, but I can't upgrade to the 911 because I'm on the mgib now?

The BAH rate for the post 9/11 GI Bill depends on the zip code of your school. Regardless if you're married or not you'd still qualify for full BAH. If you get more money out of the post 9/11 GI Bill go for it. You can always upgrade anytime to the Post 9/11 GI Bill at anytime. They'll just stop your MGIB at the end of the month and start the Post 9/11 starting the beginning of the next. I went to school down the OC and it was a pain in the butt to get the 9/11 GI Bill started. But it was way worth it. If you have any questions feel free to let me know.

That appears to be for distance learning not vocational training. Do you have a better link to information which address the vocational aspect?

Ok so Im reading here-and it looks like they pay your tuition directly to the school, and the only cash you get is the BAH.

So since I have all my fees waived, and I get the full time GI bill amount, I would actually make less on the 911 gi bill, right?

So for a full time student who pays no tuition the MGIB is better than 911.

I have been using Post 9/11 since last fall. It pays all tuition directly to the school. You also receive a books stipend every semester based on how many credits you are taking. You get E5 w/dependents BAH (Based on zip of school) as long as you take 7 or more credits per semester.

So if your school fees were waived you wouldn't get to pocket that cash?

if your going to a regular old fashion school the new one is nice but if your going to a technical training school the mgib might be the only one the will cover any cost, but the ch.33 bill is being changed this year to cover more programs (like flight training) (H.R. 3813 and S. 3171) because 70% of mgib claims are not covered under ch. 33 so depending on what your doing it may not be covered, its hard to get good info from the va i would try places like iava first

Nope. They will only pay the school for your your tuition.
It works out though...with the BAH and book money I took 2 classes and made around $9K last semester.

Is it only 7? That's cool! I thought it was 9...

I might be using it soon, too but we'll see. I might hold off and wait until they make up their mind about flight training.

The other thing you can do (in regards to flight training) is find a school that offers an "aviation operations" degree program. Then, it could be covered...

I don't know how that works, but a few schools have already figured out how to game the system.
