Going Army, a little help please.

Alright, so I am joining the Army. I was originally thinking of going OCS, but as the pipeline is long, they no longer offer the CLRP (College Loan Repayment Program), and my GPA sucked, that looks to be out. In any case, I kind of like not having to play the MOS lottery anymore.

Maybe it's a cliche, but I kind of want to go jump out of helicopters and be all high speed and such, so infantry is for me. That leaves me looking at 11X, option 40, or 18X.

I have a lot of questions, so any answers to any of them are very much appreciated. I don't expect anyone to know all the answers to all these questions, but if you can help with even one of them, thank you in advance.

I am 29, and I have a BA in Political Science. I speak fluent French. I also have dual citizenship (Sweden) which I would prefer not to give up because an EU passport is a very useful thing to have once I am eventually back in the civilian world. That said, I was born a US citizen, and I also have a TS security clearance from when I did an internship with the State Dept (6 years ago).

    Option 40
My recruiter says there are no Option 40 contracts at the moment so I am SOL on that. Anyone think he's wrong?

    18X
I know a little about the 18X program, but I didn't even ask for it, he says they have a mission order or something to find 18X candidates and he thought it might fit me, so he brought it up. Being a fit, healthy, 29 year-old foreign language-speaking college-grad, I suppose this makes sense. I don't even know where to begin on what to ask for in my contract though if I were to go this route. Does anyone know?

    1. How many years? I hear both 5 and 6. What part of training is not counted towards those years?
    2. What kind of signing bonus? About.com shows a $16k bonus with a 5 year enlistment, or $20k with a 6 year enlist. Who knows how old that info is, but does anyone know if that's right?
    3. Could I still get the CLRP if I went this way? If yes, how would that affect my signing bonus?
    4. What about my dual citizenship? Is this a problem? Would I need to renounce my Swedish citizenship? If yes, is this still true, even though I already have a TS clearance through State?

My thought here is kind of why not. Even if I don't make it, I end up 11B and probably with jump school. It is always something I thought of as a bit of a dream job. That said, I am concerned that if I do make it and decide I want to go the OCS route down the road, I am kind of shutting myself out of that option. Do people go 18X then OCS later? Is that even really an option?

    11X
He is offering me a 3 year contract with Loan repayment (CLRP) and a $2000 signing bonus. This seems like a good flexible option as I had previously thought I needed a 6 year commitment for CLRP. My feeling is that doing this would put me in a good position to go OCS, SFAS, or underwater BB stacking school, or whatever once I'm in and it comes time to re-up in one to two years (my understanding is re-ups become avail 2 years before your contract is up). Or I could decide the life is not for me and walk away with my loans paid off (and of course hopefully no injuries or missing limbs, but that conversation is for another time and place).
    Questions:
    1. Am I correct in thinking that I could use the short contract to leverage my way into re-upping OCS or some other or more specific MOS once I'm in and have a better feel for the Army in general?
    2. The $2000 bonus seems low based on what I am reading elsewhere. Any thoughts? Is this because of the CLRP?

    OTHER CONCERNS:
    CLRP:
    1. I have both Perkins and DIRECT Loans. I see Perkins on the list, but I don't see DIRECT loans. They are federal loans though so they should count, right? Does anyone know if DIRECT Loans are covered in the CLRP?
    2. I also have some Wells Fargo Private loans. I imagine these would not be eligible, correct?
    3. If I were to consolidate all my loans under a DIRECT Loans consolidated loan, would the money from the old Wells Fargo loans be covered?

    Laser Eye Surgery:
I wear contact lenses. I have astigmatism. It is correctable, but I understand I can get Uncle Sugar to give me some laser love and fix my eyes. I am told that this is not something I can get a guarantee on in my contract. Is this true? Should I be trying to get lasik in my contract?

    Storage for personal effects:
I am 29, I have stuff. Like a 20' Conex shipping container's worth of stuff. My recruiter says there is nothing I can get in my contract in regards to storage of personal stuff. Is this true, or is there possibly something out there that I can use to have my stuff stored while I am off in training?

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but that's a good start.
    Thanks in advance everyone,
    -Pete

11b and jump school which is about 6 months first
18x if you pass(sfas) is 2 year of non stop training
if you want it put it in your mind now go after it and dont quit
bad frame of mind if you are thinking whats the worst case if i dont pass

18X, and for that matter the pre-requisite 11B and Airborne training are not conducive for anyone that is asking "what's in it for me?" You have to want to do this kind of job, and almost invariably you will suffer greatly for that choice. What's in it for you is the knowledge that you did your part. Absolutely, take advantage of any VA programs and entitlements, I sure did, but they were not the reason I served.

My advice to anyone that enlists nowadays is to know that you will be deployed; to understand you might not make it back, and if you do, the benefits offered are not the reason you went in the first place.

+1. If you are set on going the Ranger BN. route you can push for an option 40, they told me and probably everyone else they had none at that time. Just don't take no for an answer. However, looking at your age/education level I would suggest not going that way, as Batt consists mostly of young studs right out of high school, so there will be a big gap with most of your peers. There are older guys with degrees that go there of course and some of them love it, and some of them go to SFAS as soon as they can. If I was in your shoes and doing it again, I'd go the 18X route, forget about any "benefits" and focus on PT and ruck marching.

Clearance was from State, not DOD, if it makes any difference.

I'm not doing this because I want to pay off my college loans or get free laser surgery, I'm doing this because it's what I want to do. That said, I would be stupid to not get the best contract I can. That's what I'm trying to find out by asking these questions.

I now realize the part about 18X comes off as non-chalant or blase or whatever. It wasn't meant to be. I never really seriously considered it as obtainable till the recruiter mentioned it though. Question is whether or not OCS would even really be a possibility down this line. Not sure that's what I would want to do, but I went into this process thinking that's what I wanted and I don't want to shut myself out of it yet. A two year pipeline followed by a few years in puts me at like 33-34 years old. Seems a bit long in the tooth for OCS, but maybe I'm wrong.
              Thanks again guys,
              -Pete

shoot bro, if I had the chance I'd go 18X... you already got a foreign language so thats definitely a big plus. Just make sure youre able to ruck like no other, and pt like no other.

I am 23 going 11X with no options. Check out Armyranger.com and Professionalsoldiers.com both are a wealth of information. For 18 series you will most definitely have to give up your dual citizenship. I just read a post on PS.com about it. They always say there are no option 40 contracts and that could be the case for now but they always pop out. One guy had to wait 9 months before he got his. Do you want to wait? 18X is some hardcore stuff and if I didn't have a wife I would be all over that.

Also about.com does not have up to date information regarding bonuses. It says 11X should get a nice bonus and also a bonus for college credits. The only bonus I got was a backpack with a t-shirt and the ship date of my dreams. Also the opportunity to be in the GREATEST ARMY in the world.

No option 40 right now, 18x possible. If youre worried about bonuses and such, might start thinking about something else. No dual citizenship for any mos that requires a security clearence.

                    Good luck.

I would say that if you want to have a TS clearance you need to pick one citizenship. Having a foreign passport really mucks up the work. I am entitled to a Canadian passport since I was born there, but that would make the folks concerned as to my loyalties (regardless of my 30 years in the Army). I even joked about it to the investigator at my last interview and he said NO! Don't get a Canadian passport!

By the way all I ever got for reenlisting was a hat. SpecOps bonuses are rather handsome now.

As for State, when I worked as the Deputy ODC in Dushanbe I was amazed at the trusted positions that local citizens had.

I'd go with an 11X contract with Airborne, a bonus, and a guaranteed duty station. Once you get to Airborne School, you'll have the option to go to Ranger School. You'll have to give up your guaranteed duty station but atleast your bonus stays. If you fail Ranger School, you'll still have the bonus but unfortunately your butt will now go on needs of the Army.

If you pass Ranger School, you can apply for SF School or wait 'til it's time to re-up. Ask for it on your contract.

If it was me, I'd take the incremental steps route. If you go 18X now, and you don't make it (not saying you won't), then you have no bonus, and your butt is going on needs of the Army. You can end up in a crappy duty station like Polk, Benning, or even Korea.

Of course, it's been awhile for me so things might actually be different now.

Duty station of choice is not an option.

11X contracts with option 40 are a very rare beast.

18X contracts can happen and when you bolo at selection, youll most likely go to an airborne unit.

If you want to be a Ranger, look into MOSs besides 11X. Infantry Ranger candidates are a dime a dozen, but its not easy for them to fill those fire support, commo, medical and other MOSs.

If you want to be SF, then take whatever MOS you think would be fun and then train up and go to selection in a year or two.

                            ^Wow, things have changed.

No more guaranteed duty station? 11X with option 40?

I knew guys that failed SF and ended up in leg units. They became some pretty po'ed mofos.

Forgot about the other Ranger MOS. Being a Forward Observer sounds like fun.

Whatever you choose, good luck. Never quit and give 200%. Aside from signing up, never ever volunteer for anything.

If you're thinking about going 18x, you HAVE to read this book.

Talks about the selection process, what you should be doing to prepare for the selection, and offers advice and tips about passing selection. While I was considering enlisting 11xOp40 I bought this book and thought the information was invaluable.
