I would maybe wait and send him a care package later with, chocolate, magazines, sun block, sunglasses Etc.Or put a bunch of cool useful thing together and give it to him now.I think it will be enjoyed and appreciated more though after he has been there awhile. But most importantly give him a hug and tell him to be safe and return ASAP.

      F**k all that stuff.
I can tell you what a Marine wants that you can't get overseas. FRESH COPE.

For real, send him a case of it and he will be a hero.

How about one of those bullet proof face shields that clips on to the helmets? They are well over $100 though

I've used my LED headstrap flashlight more than any other single implement here in OEF. Under $100 and supremely useful. Get one with a red filter that slides or flips up over the white light.

Like some people already stated, I think a care package a little later will mean a lot. But I would suggest getting him something sentimental, and save the rest to spend on a care package.

Maybe $100 towards a good pair of boots? I heard those are pretty valuable.

For sure! I remember in '98 you could get Cope for $2 bucks a can at a stateside PX. But over in Kuwait, you could get $15. This was because it rarely came in and sold out quick, much like ammo at Wally world now. I never recycled Cope until I was there. If he doesn't use it he can share it and really get in good with the other jarheads.

Things they can't get there like liquor and nudie mags will really help his morale.

Oh snaps, forgot about the porno..... yea that too.

Trust me dude.... DIP, and I mean Cope not Skoal or Kodiak or any other BS like that.

If you give the dude Cope, anything he wants, he can get by trading the Cope for it.

My son is deploying to Afghanistan next month. I got him a "Kindle" electronic reader that he can fill with books before he goes, and a Grayman "Mega Pounder 7.5" knife (www.graymanknives.com). Both are more than $100, but he loves to read and likes my Grayman 'way better than a Kabar.

Last time I got him a Spyderco "Endura" folder and a Gerber multitool. He uses the knife more than the tool, but appreciated them both. I believe that they were just over $100 for both, from www.southerntackle.com. They give free shipping for orders over $100. My military friends say the "Endura" is about the smallest knife (4" combo edge) that will reliably cut aluminum sheet, safety harness/seat belt, and electrical cabling. I got him a "foliage green" one (which is really kinda gray green).
