Maybe your reserve *** isn't feeling as proud as your grandpa, but that is no reason to insult the proud brave active military serving today. I have lost some of the best guys over there and they live up to every bit of your fantasy soldier of WW2 that you never even met or had any interaction with.

It could be argued that any of our Servicemen today, that are willing to volunteer during war time now are of the same caliber as those that volunteered back then, and would have done the same. So let's stop the arguing and personal attacks guys.

Back on original topic, wish I had HBO to watch the pacific, guess Band of Brothers will have to hold me over till it comes out on DVD.

I just enlisted and I am 23 years old. I scored a 91 on the ASVAB and could probably do any job I wanted. What did I choose? 11X (Infantry). Why because I want to serve my country with all that I have and to come out of it a better person because of my service. I am doing this for my family, my wife, my friends, my co-workers and my country. Do I want to be called great? No that is not even why I joined. So if people call us great or them great so be it, because I will be great in my mind and the mind of family and that is all that matters to me.

-Side note, I have been watching The Pacific and it gives me goosebumps every time, yet it also makes me excited and nervous for what is to come for me in my future as an Infantryman in the Greatest Military on the planet.

You guys DO realize that the term "Greatest Generation" is a term coined by journalist Tom Brokaw to describe the generation who grew up in the United States during the deprivation of the Great Depression, and then went on to fight in World War II. Right?

Been active for the last twelve years, sport. And this thread was made to pay a compliment to mine (and your) forefathers. Like I just said...the term "Greatest Generation" is a term that REFERS TO THE WWII generation.

My great uncle (May God rest his soul!) was a WWII vet! Yes, they were the greatest generation, however, that takes nothing away from today's serviceman. (Or women)

They all played (or are playing) a role in defending our country. God bless them all!

                My 2cents anyway!

so i think they do deserve the greatest generation title

Most people agree. And most reasonable people can see that this had NOTHING to do with the current crop, rather just marveling about the accomplishments of WWII soldiers and marines.

Then again...the Internet is a GREAT place because privates can be disrespectful to NCO's without fear. Hence the trolling E-2's.

I think I read somewhere that HBO will only be putting a select number of episodes on their website for viewing. Hopefully, the series will be out for sale before the holidays roll around.

Each generation of our soldiers has had to face it's own hell and had it's own unique problems to over come. World War II was the last all out war with nothing held back. Starting with Korea our troops have been part of so-called police actions and have never been allowed to do what they were supposedly sent to do. Politicians have controlled our conflicts in Korea, Viet Nam, and every other war including todays conflicts and our soldiers are not being allowed to win these wars even though they are dying in them. Volunteer or draftee they have to be respected for their committment to us and this country. I served from 1967-1969 and whether it is an old WWII vet in a wheelchair or a young kid fresh out of the middle east conflict he is my brother as long as he served honorably. If you can disrepect a soldier because of his war or the generation he came from you were not much of one yourself.

We were asked to put on a uniform and die for this country and many of us did over the last hundred years. Those of us lucky enough to come home, came home often to ridicule because we had the audacity to survive. Often not quite as whole as when we left. The public did not want to make a place for us again so we had to fight our way back in after we were asked to do this terrible deed of going to war. How quickly the public forgets it was the one who asked us to do this deed and now it no longer wants us around. If we do not respect each other who will respect us? I will go to my death gladly defending this country but I will not defend disprect of any soldier who served honorably in any war.

Where did I disrespect anyone? I gave a drunken, nostalgic compliment to WWII vets and expressed my admiration for them. They're role models for every generation of military members.

A couple of younger servicemen got on here and took it the wrong way.

I don't think anyone said you disrepected anyone and that does not appear to be what Big Red said. Unfortunately there are plenty of other people out here who do not respect the contributions of each generation of soldiers who keep this country free. WWII was the biggest war and my father traveled all over the globe fighting it in the Navy. Every soldier uses the soldiers before him/her as his/her role models. He was my model and I grew up watching the real war footage of Victory at Sea. As child I knew every time I saw a Corsair crashing into the sea a real American died and this was no Hollywood set. I don't think Big Red has anything against what you said but he wanted to put his two cents in for the rest of the troops. It is what we all fought for.

The WWII men, the "Brownshoe Soldiers" (as we called the few that were still serving when I was in), no doubt deserved the title of the Greatest Generation. And we can pay homage and respect to them with that description and not denigrate the veterans that came before or after them.

Lighten up people. The guy was complimenting veterans.
