    College

I currently have 61 college credits and I want to continue my education and get a BA degree. I am in the army and I am stationed in Hawaii on Schofield Barracks. Right now I have a meeting with The University of Phoenix on Wednesday. I did some looking around online and it looks like it is pretty pricey but a good education and easy to complete while on deployment.

I was wondering what you guys have done to get your education. I want to pay as little money as possible and do all my classes online.

I am going to NTC in a couple weeks and then off to Iraq in late June or early July. So I am hoping to get a lot of my school out of the way while I'm deployed.

So, what do you guys recommend?

I think Cal State Dominguez Hills Distance Learning Program is cheaper, but they only offer one degree.

Not that the Cal State system is the best, I would much rather have a Cal State school's name on my degree than University of Phoenix, but that's just me.

Also, look into University of Alaska, Fairbanks. I've heard that they have distance learning programs where military members are treated as state residents, so the fees aren't too astronomical.

Go to the education center on post and enroll in earmyu, get the tuition assistance form to your Commander and hve him sign it.

You get $4500 a school year to spend on education that does not effect your GI Bill.

      USE IT.

That would make it easy. The ed center here is closed. The civilian contract ran out and they never renewed it or something like that.

I will look up earmyu online right now.

Formerly 25th ID here, tropic lightning. What unit?

I tried going to school while there and it was impossible for me. I did the NTC -> Iraq route too and never had the time for it. Your unit does NOT have to give you time to do schoolwork and there just wasn't internet access in NTC while you're out in the box and very limited access in Iraq.

Not trying to discourage you or anything but it does take a lot motivation and personal time. I had to focus on the mission which was more important to me at the time. My advice is enroll in eArmyu at the ed center on schofield and get approved for TA like others suggested (you won't get a chance anywhere else) and wait till you actually get to Iraq to take classes where it's probably like garrison now and internet is easily accessible.

            Good luck!

I am in 2-14 Cav HHT. I talked to my Sgt about it and he told me that in Iraq after the first month or so I should have some free time available. I enrolled in classes at University of Phoenix and I start my classes when I get back from NTC. I can put classes on hold for up to a month without withdrawing or anything. After a month then I can cancel them if need be for no penalty. There classes for military are $250 a semester hour.

CIF here is such a joke.

That's probably the best way to do. The good thing about Phoenix is you can kinda work at your own pace.

If you're talking about initial issue at CIF then hell yes. You will have about 1-200 people with you and you will get absolutely no time to inspect your gear. Replacement NCOs aren't any help either because they'll just keep rushing and rushing you. I ended up with some waterproof bags with holes in them and a couple of other damaged TA-50. If you want to DX, its' a pain in the *** too.

I had to pay for an IBA (that I still have) when I cleared because my unit swapped it for an ACU one to deploy and the serial number didn't match the one that CIF issued to me originally. This could've been my supply's fault as well.

Too fun. I already had my initial issue, I just got to go get the plates for my IOTV since they were out last time I was there. I also had to take a new guy to get his initial issue.

The replacement cadre didn't take us. We did it once we got to our units.

Cool that you guys get IOTVs now. We were using flak jackets and then switched to IBAs with ISAPIs. I guess a lot's changed since I've been there (2003-08). How do you like IOTVs? I heard they're smaller and provide less protection than the IBA.
