If he takes some extra M9 magazines he will not have any problem bringing them back. Customs isn't going to know how many he was issued and could care less as long as they are for his issued weapons.

He should just inquire with the armory to sign him out some more then the standard 2 they issue. They normally have plenty. Worse case they just say no.

If he's got problems with his SAW he needs to inform his chain of command and the armorer.

Not sure how his unit is working it, but on one of my deployments we got SAWs from the unit we were RIPing with. On another deployment our SAW gunners took and used the ones they were issued here stateside and still another deployment it was a combination of SAWs issued here that we took and some that were stock weapons with the unit we were RIPing.

Sorry to say, as raggedy as the SAW may be, if it passes LTI and PFI (limited technical inspection and pre firing inspection) it's going to be good to go in the eyes of the .mil

Things have to go really, really bad if you're going to your secondary as the SAW gunner.
Unless youre playing modern warfare 2 then you just swap out and shoot bad guys at ridiculous distances with a super powered M9..hehe

Tell him to just avoid the heavy, heavy parkerized ones if he can and then go to Brownells web site and order him some wolf + 10lbs springs. Have him swap out the POS springs in the Mil Mags and he will be fine then reverse it when he come home so you can swap out yours.

He should just buy some complete rebuild kits of desired manufacture and put them together once he's out of California.

As per the comment about "not beating up personally owned weapons or parts overseas." I believe the entire purpose of borrowing or purchasing hi-caps is to have a reliable weapon to trust your life to. I couldn't care less about some relatively cheap magazines...
