Goathead what MOS are you? Is it that bad out in Afghanistan? Not trying to sound dumb I'm really just wondering as I have no knowledge of it. I had buddies that served but mostly in Iraq and said it was not AS bad as people make it seem.

What's the availability like for receiving mail/packages, surfing the internet & making phone calls?

I may have some other questions regarding cousin deploying to Afghanistan.

It sucks. No candy canes or chocolate rivers

BUT, the night sky is darker than you have ever seen. With few lights and electricity the only things your NVGs can pick up are random small fires or ever present thunderstorms.
You can see stars you've never seen, and with NVGs you can see satellites, nebulas and things from your 5-10,000ft vantage point. Take it all in.

Here is one shot I took, small res but you can see the stars in the sky against the pitch black mountain tops. The photo makes it look bright but it was a 15sec exposure, in reality, it was so dark you could barely see.

                        Stay safe.

Maybe goathead can post a photo of his mountains, I have an idea where he is.
I think there would be a few places to ski from, but there are few trees and suitable geo features. Who knows, maybe after clearing the millions of mines they can turn it into an Xtreme sports area.

In the north there are nice peaks, if going straight down is your style. The south is pretty flat with spires like Utah or Nevada.

Here is one north of Bagram, 17K ft. There were a few instances of a SAM shot from mountains this high, whoever that mofo was, he must have been real cold! We'd fly right down it almost snowboarding the plane along its countour to take advantage of the slipstream.

in the east the peaks are lower but dont get much snow, here are some in the background.
