I'm not so sure the guys/girls in the sand box would like to have the whole world know they're not here guarding the homestead...

Depends on if we're posting screen names for 'general interest', or people's real names and addresses for some reason.

I'm not too sure if that's OPSEC. We were told that's mainly troop movement (time and dates). But seems that the media knows before the troops even do. :roll eyes:

Paranoia much? Violating OPSEC would be if he wanted the names, socials, unit, which fob or base they are at, numbers ect ect. Its been widely known here in the past when very popular members were deployed like soldier415 or stormfeather and lets not forget the thread of servicemember pics in uniform. The guy may want to do something positive and you guys are busting his balls.

Seems to be a good idea, then we can send out carepacks to any units deployed.

that is not busting his balls at all. if someone wants to disclose their location and name that is on the indivivdual. OPSEC is very important to the safety of those deployed and family members at home. think i'm paranoiod go ahead and think that way. i was taught this stuff while deployed at it has stuck.

The biggest enemy of opsec is the us military. I am actually deployed but I've mentioned it in posts like when I got casevac'd. I wouldnt want any care package because I dont believe I deserve it.
How many times do you get a notice via email from the military saying, "opps, our bad. we just happened to 'lose' a laptop containing half the service members socials and adresses."
Its a pretty big stretch thinking that our home front is in danger because a member here may want to do positive things for some servicemembers on this board when servicemembers themselves have posted pictures here of themselves rolling out of thier fob while deployed.
As far as him wanting to know who is deployed, there is probably a greater danger just being a member here and posting pictures of your open gunsafe or your picture holding your rifle than letting someone know you are deployed.

You arnt doing anything wrong. Like I said, in the past, VERY popular calgunners would send pics of themselves while deployed or reported which country they were in (which I dont think they were violating nor am I trying to throw them under the bus) I've seen other calgunners do things like what you are trying to do in the past with people giving kudos so I have no idea why you are getting blocked.
I'm more afraid of the government screwing up again and leaking all my personal info than a calgunner trying to do good but to each their own. Maybe if you asked for calgunners to PM you with known members who are deployed it will go more smoothly?

the only issue the disclosure of exact locations. the CG's that have been dployed only gave country and general location of their AO. you should know about this by now and should be reaming people for disclosing information on missions and such. you are deployed and you are in a place to learn a thing or two. take advantage of deployment as you will learn more in the year you are gone than an entire career in the service. take home what you learn and teach it.
OPSEC is one of them. take my word for it. if not then fine. others here are concerned for the safety of those deployed and family at home. and don't think for one second that boards like this are not watched by Al-Qaeda and the like. too much information is on the net that is dangerous to operations today.

This is pretty much the gist of what I have cooking...but it's not going too well.

Figuring out which calgunners are out there on the front lines, and which calgunners here at home are available for support is proving more challenging that I initially thought.

I had assumed (i know, i know) that, by virtue of the fact that so many of our members here share that status with the board, that it would be fairly easy to square away a list.

Not being .mil or anything of that nature, I didnt realize that this would be such an issue.

                              ..............back to the drawing board.
dude what you are doing is a great thing. there are concerns of where these people are and there exact location. that is the only issue. a PM or e-mail is the correct way to get the list you are looking for.

again there is absolutely nothing wrong supporting the troops. at least you want to do something of substance not lip service.
