What socks for Marine Corps OCS

Im shipping out Jan 15th to attend Marine OCC. Its located in Quantico, Virginia

Basically it is going to be cold...really cold. I am born and raised in Southern California and I do not know what the cold really feels like.

Can anyone chime in on what socks I should use. My OSO kept stressing get warm socks. Any of you guys that have done cold weather training etc I would appreciate your input.

I believe they just need to be black

    Socks

These are a proven brand of socks for Marine Corps OCS, For what it's worth. And you can get them at the MCX.

when my son was in chicago with the navy we got him socks at REI i cant remeber what they are called but the most important thing is that they wick the wet away if they retain water and it gets real cold you can freeze your feet i remember that the people working had a lot of knowledge

Go to a local REI or outdoors store and ask one of the people there. They usually have good insight. I personally favor synthetic/cotton blends. I might consider getting the ones that jeepsrbetter posted... thanks!

Yeah, the REI smart wool is good, but I'm not sure if it's acceptable at OCS. I remember Thorlo socks being available in recruit training, but I haven't used them since.

            Thanks for the help.

Anything else that "not on the list" that would be extremely helpful?

Totally OT, but I have to share.

When I went to boot camp, we were basically told just to bring the clothes on our backs. I remember my mom asking me if I could bring my "comfy pants" (what she calls sweat pants).

Of course, she had no idea that everything you have entering boot camp gets sealed in a box and put in storage until graduation. The thought of this still cracks me up, though.

"Sir, this recruit requests permission to don his comfy pants, sir!"

Smartwool. They make them in enough colors that you should be able to find some that meet the reg.

Smartwool for sure. Honestly, as long as the tops of the socks are black, I don't remember having to shuck my boots to prove that my socks were all black.

I'm assuming you'll be issued the temperate weather boots, and they're lined with goretex, so it actually does a pretty good job keeping your feet warm with smartwool, thorlos, or the stuff jeepsrbetter posted. It's not like you're going to Bridgeport, so it'll be cold, but not THAT cold. If your feet are super-sensitive to cold, then I think Smartwool sells some sock liners that you can put on first before your primary socks.

That being said, with all the gear you're going to hump around, you'll warm up fast enough with just a long-sleeve PT shirt at most under your cammies. Nothing worse than over-dressing with the polypro or the fleece, but I'm sure your OSO talked about that too.

Those are the socks I have on right now. I am in the army but same thing. They are $8 at the MCSS and it is well worth it. I am in Georgia and it gets in the high 20's in the morning and with my summer boots on they do a good job.

Weird, we were not allowed to bring anything except running shoes and the clothes on our backs. They took everything away and we got it back a day or 2 before graduation.

                          I forgot the brand.
but in boot I bought "Combat boot socks" Extra thick and warm.
You should be able to get some while in OCS
