I just looked at my ERB and my next duty station is Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. I don't report there until 14 February 2010. Has anyone been stationed there? I am at AIT right now and I can't wait to get the heck out of Georgia.

Heard some good things about it, but you sorta have to like being water locked. A friend of mine was stationed in Hawaii and he enjoyed it but said he preferred it in Europe where some time off and a train ticket can net you a fantastic trip through multiple countries in a short amount of time. I suppose you could visit the other islands but...I'd imagine they'd be roughly the same. -
Not a bad assignment...
I lived in HI for 3 years although on Kauai, not the Big Island....IMHO, it's all about what YOU decide to make of it. There is a lot of neat things to do and experience while you are stationed there don't limit your horizons!!
Enjoy!Isn't moderation great? If you cry loud enough, you'll always get your way.... Freedom of speach is not a novel concept in some places is it? NO, but censureship sure is~Comment

Get a local ID when you get there.
Hawaii has three tiered pricing on everything, tourist price, military price, and local price.sigpic
If you haven't seen it with your own eyes,
or heard it with your own ears,
don't make it up with your small mind,
or spread it with your big mouth.Comment

Was stationed there for 5years...94-99.....Good Times!!! Tropic Lightning!
Whats your MOS?
Watch out for the mongoose and your ruck, Embrace the Kahukus, Red Dirt stays, the bus is/was a 1$ to get anywhere, you have no business in Waianae, enjoy the island/s,stay away from mahoos unless thats your thing.Comment

Oh yea..... thousands of people from all around the world spend a lifetime with Hawaii as their one place to go during their lifetime....some never get that chance. Get your family and/or friends to come visit. Be their portal since you have a free vacation spot for the next few years.Comment

Stationed at Pearl for 3 years. Honolulu is pretty commercialized and tons of tourist - spend some time on the other islands if you can. Rock fever does set in after a while though. You'll be talking the kine pidgeon english in no time. Oh yeah, take Stockton's advice, stay away from the mahoos - unless of course your into that kinda stuffComment

My MOS is 25U. Signal Support Systems Specialist.
I was told that since I don't have my official orders that it could change but that it probably wont.
Some of the other guys that I am going through AIT with are also getting stationed at Schofield Barracks.
Sounds like it could be a lot of fun getting stationed there.Comment

I was never stationed there but I lived on the same island for a few months and saw everything in about a week. Other than that it got really boring and I found myself LONGING to come back to the states. Its really hit and miss with the people there, all the locals are either really really nice, or they really really hate you. I was in georgia for basic and AIT and I would have to say.... I like georgia betterComment

Was there from '90-92, working in the Urgent Care Clinic and driving ambulances at Schofield.
Hope you're a beach guy, because otherwise the Rock Fever will settle in fast. The military owns all the best beaches around.
Be prepared for sticker shock, EVERYTHING is SUPER expensive on the islands. Even at the commissary, milk was close to $5/gal and that was in the early '90's. Try and stay away from Honolulu/Waikiki, it's all tourist trap. Honolulu was a large and dirty city when I was there, and Waikiki is nothing to write home about.
Get used to mahi-burgers, they're a staple on the island. Even the regular hamburgers there will have a fishy taste to them, the Big Island had quite a lot of cattle on it and much of it was fed fish mulch. Oh, lots and lots of Korean and Chinese BBQ. I've never had fried rice as good as what I got at this little Chinese place not far outside the gates. Of course there wasn't any english spoken, though the owner/cook claimed to be speaking english. Lots of menus with pretty pictures and numbers on them, and your order by pointing at what you want.
Enjoy the food, make sure you get to the Arizona Memorial, the flea market at Aloha stadium, and of course you have to hike Diamondhead.

How hard is it to get house?
Oh yeah, what are the gun laws like there? Can you get a concealed carry permit there? Are there places to go out shooting?
Is there camping and that kind of stuff there?
If I wanted to go to Airborne, how hard would it be to get? I was going to go after AIT but it didn't work out.Comment

I made it through basic just fine. I got sick the first week and it ended up turning into pneumonia and I was all screwed up until the 5th week of basic but other then that everything has gone pretty good.
Thank you for helping me and all that junk. It was definitely the right decision for me.Comment

if your not married your going to need to get off post housing authorized, this can only happen when the barracks are above 80% if i remember correctly, then youll need your chain of command to sign off on it so it will highly depend on your unit. house availability will be highly dependant on what units are deployed. How hard is it to get house?

i wasn't into civilian guns when i was there but ccw id say almost definitely no. the only places i remember being able to shoot were in Waikiki, they had these indoor things where you pay like 50 bucks to shoot a couple rounds from an ar, they are more oriented towards Japanese tourists.
there is camping ect, alot of its on military property so your in luck.
airborne is going to depend on if your unit will send you. unless you get it in your contract when you reup if you do i wouldn't bet on it happening, a more likely option would be air assault when i was there they had the school closed for awhile but it may be open now. with any school they're going to look at it like why do we need to send a guy in a non airborne unit from Hawaii to Georgia to get qualified in something he wont be doing. im not try to discourage you but i dont see it being likely unless you can do it before you get there.sigpicComment
