Darrel "Shifty" Powers Dies

Shifty Powers was immortalized as the army sharp shooter in Band of Brothers. He died June 17, 2009. There were no fan fares or media coverage, only the tears of family, close friends, and admirers. In the midst of celebrity deaths, a hero's passing is forgotten.

To Darrel "Shifty" Powers' family, my condolences and apologies for a nation that has forgotten its true hero's. Side by side, the deeds of men like Shifty cannot compare to any entertainer or celebrity.

Soldier to Soldier, we will never forget each other and cherish the moments we fight together. Thank you for those that continue your service and welcome those that are considering or just joining our family.

I read the poem, then reread it to my wife.

This kinda put a damper to my day.

I vividly remember my World War Two class in college, and how our professor tried his very best to bring in as many WW2 Veterans to come and speak their stories to us. He tried his best because it is a saddening reality that they're not going to be around much longer; and their stories ought to be known.

I liked Shifty's character in all the BoB related writings, and Peter Hills' portrayal of him in the HBO series.

I remember watching the Band of Brothers interviews with Shifty - great stuff. He sure seemed like a real neat and humble guy. Thoughts and prayers to his family & friends.
