A friend told me that the US Marine Corps dropped the full auto option in their M16A2, so it's only SAFE/SINGLE/BURST. Is this true?

yeah.... about 30 years ago give or take. The M16A2 never had full auto capability. Only the A1 which was used in 'Nam. Google and wikipedia is your friend.

Yes, and the M16A4 (standard issue USMC) is the same, as is the M4 (standard issue Army).
