Any active or former Navy nucs?

So my son just got back from taking the ASVAB (PICAT) and scored high enough to qualify for the Navy's nuclear program which he's seriously considering. Should he go MM, ET, EM or is that determined by needs of the Navy? Any tips on how to prepare himself for nuc school or life as an active duty nuc would be much appreciated. I can only advice him on general Navy life and my experience is decades old.

Just be aware that nuclear power school has a big drop out rate. I knew a lot of cooks that were nuc drop outs. Needs of the Navy, if you cannot complete the school.

Search youtube for first hand experiences as a navy nuc. Not trying to scare you, but I want your son to be aware of all possibilities.

Mechanical, wrench turning, system theory.
Electrical, theory,

Ive work with both.

No matter what path, he will learn Nuclear Theory.
Very intense schooling. 2-+ years.
Very intense and long days on ship.
If he does head that direction have him look into Submarine Service.

Actually there are all three Ratings on all Nuclear Vessels.
Each has a specific job.
MM= Mechanical
EM= Electrical
ET= Reactor Chemistry

As far as initially joining, you get a nuc contract, the only thing u can do is volunteer on subs or decline to volunteer. U don’t get to pick which of the three before u ship out.

Is a nuclear skillset very useful any more? I almost joined the sub service many moons ago but that's when nuclear power plants were still being built and the job skills were worth big bucks in the civilian job market.
