Hi all. New officer here, captain in Army reserves. One of the other officers in my unit was recently promoted to Lt Colonel. I respect and admire this person and he has been very helpful with info and advice to several of us junior officers. I'd like to get him something nice for his promotion, maybe a bottle of good whiskey or an engraved knife, etc. First question is, is this appropriate to give a gift in this fashion to a senior officer? Second, if ok, what would be a good item to give? Thanks in advance for guidance.

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

If I recall, you're brand new to the USAR. I would see it as weird. As others said, I'd stick to a group thing at the very most. On a personal level, nothing more than a "card".
Everyone I saw get promoted was expected to be the one picking up the tab, or buying the first round.
It's probably not a good thing to be seen as the brand new two ribbon CPT getting the LTC a gift. It's the thing EO and SHARP briefs are made of.Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.Comment

Agreed. Thank you for the insight, very helpful. I ran it by the other officers and the XO. We are going to do something as a unit for the Colonel since he is transferring to another unit. I feel more comfortable hanging back in the group and just chipping in a few bucks for his parting gift.I'm sure there are regulations covering this.

A bottle of Scotch or Whiskey is the only gift I've given or received. Practically a second currency in my job.
