Higher pulled the plug on my unit's Holiday Party

If I posted this on FB and pointed fingers of units and commands I'm sure there would be blow back in my direction.

So'm I'm going to rant here.

What it came down to is we are an isolated Company level unit. Our BN, and BG are elsewhere geographically. As such, we are pretty much on our own in regards to getting things done. So we don't get to leverage off of any year end holiday festivities higher levels might be doing.

For the past 10 years or so the American Legion has been hosting my unit's Holiday Party. Since the unit doesn't have a civilian employee/mil tech per regs no one in uniform can administer a bank account for such purposes. So we can't generate any kind of funding.

We got a Santa, a Chaplin, Toys from Dollar Tree donations, etc....It's all good, we are good to go. Execution is complete.

The problem is we got some donations, and how we articulated to the Legal Officer at higher command how we got those donations tripped us up.

My understanding is the food donations are what got us. Someone in uniform coordinated the food. Had it been a non unit associated civilian we would have been good to go.

So higher command legal said cancel it. Now the American Legion is going to be stuck with all this extra food, and the unit leadership had to scramble to conduct a legitimate training day schedule.

I am beside myself, and disgusted every time I now see FB feeds of my peers in other units having their year end events. I'm even more disgusted higher levels in my chain above us are conducting such events.

Now I have to help manage this cluster and communicate to my NCO's and soldiers why this BS happened, and how the Army is still good for them.

Worst yet, it's all semantics, and we will get around the game next year.

    Thank you for your service.

    Merry F'ing Christmas.

That really sucks. I'm genuinely sorry to hear that. I always enjoy our formal parties, and I'm about to head out early for mine, as I have been assigned as a general's aide. Should be fun, but a lot of work.

The tradition and ceremony of the military is one of the things that I love about it, and it is disgraceful that it will be denied to younger soldiers on a technicality like that.

One of the reasons I ended up hating the military was the tone-deaf leadership. At least 50% of the officer corps are not leadership material at all....

Big reason I didn't make it a career 20 year choice. Every single person counts especially when isolated. Maybe if possible try to have something organized for compensation of poor leadership.

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

Not trying to compete but there could always be worse. My command just got back from a 9 month deployment only to get 2 months notice for a homeport shift(not a true one due to weird legality stuff so no benefits) for a 9 month ESRA. No money allotted to move family unless out of pocket, no povs unless moved out of pocket, no three hots provided and 2 hour commute to get from rented barracks to work and back. Oh yeah, no holiday party either.

Was your company 1stSgt not involved in the planning? He should have known to have run all of the plans through the legal officer before you solidified anything.

I don't understand. Is he being forced out for being an ammo-grabbing fascist or for being a failure as an ammo-grabbing fascist?

Why would you need outside donations to have a Christmas party? The donations (in the form of money) come from your non-rates and NCO's, anything additional is covered by staff NCO's. I always thought troop welfare started at the individual level.

Follow up. We had the party, but it was after hours when the Drill Day was over. So about only 1/3 showed up, and it was in civilians.

The reason we can't raise money is because we don't have civilians to administer the self funded entertainment funds.

What it really comes down to is how we articulate with legal.

Honestly, it shouldn't have to be like this, but it is, and we need to simply make sure the future process of "playing the game" in handed off to future planners accordingly,

We never asked legal about our Christmas party funds in the 20 years I've been on duty (mixed AD and Reserve). One year an outside inspector did tell us to discontinue our coffee fund (old coffee can where each person taking cup of coffee would put 25 cents) because it was not compliant with MWR fund process. We complied for awhile.
