Son accepted into Navy Nuclear School

He is trying to decide what rating to go for, machinists mate, electronic tech, or electricians mate. Does anyone have any insight or advise I could pass on to him to possibly help him decide?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Machinist's Mate (MM), Electronics Technician (ET), and Electrician's Mate (EM) are all source ratings for the Nuclear Power Program. Is that your son's objective? Then of course, he will have to decide whether to go surface or submarine. All good ratings with excellent training, lots of sea duty, and bonuses available. With a positive attitude and outstanding performance many great opportunities will be available to him and he will be able to be promoted quickly and regularly.

Navy Nuke is a hard life, but most of the Sailors I know seem to enjoy it; it definitely has that "elite" aspect to it due to the academic difficulty of the training pipeline... sort of like special forces for nerds.

Unless NNPTC has changed recently, you don't get to choose your source rating; it's based on needs of the Navy, instructor input, and occasionally the student's wishlist.
